AUCTIONEERS overestimated the power of the dark side.
An original Darth Vader costume from a 'Star Wars' movie did not sell at auction on Thursday when no bidder offered to pay the reserve price, Christie's auctioneers said.
The outfit - a jet-black helmet, mask and armor - was expected to sell for between 160,000 pounds and 230,000 pounds (S$330,000 to $474,400). The reserve price is confidential but generally it is just under the minimum expected price.
Christie's said bidding stopped at 150,000 pounds. The costume is thought to have been made for 'The Empire Strikes Back,' the second film in George Lucas's sci-fi series, released in 1980.
The auction house's head of popular culture, Neil Roberts, said the costume is one of the most iconic in the history of cinema. Christie's did not name the seller, identified only as an American private collector.
Meanwhile, a gun used in an advertising campaign for a James Bond movie was sold for more than 10 times its estimated value at Thursday's auction of movie memorabilia. The Walther air pistol held by Bond actor Sean Connery in the poster for the 1963 film, From Russia With Love, was sold for 277,250 pounds to an unidentified telephone bidder, Christie's said
If i had money like that to just spend on whatever I would buy it.
Where can I sell a kidney or three?
if you know the minute visual detail differences between suits for each film (patterns were embedded into each suit to prevent people from make exact replicas without permission, so if the pattern showed up, they'd know that it was done without authorization) you could tell what film it was for.
what the fuck i want it
So is this possibly the same costume worn in the Cloud City duel scene?
Maybe all the really obsessive fans had just spent all their money on replica stormtrooper armour and had got lost while LARPing?
I wouldn't want to buy it because I would probably be too tempted to run around wearing it and then break it and then cry.
How many Facepunchers could even wear it? It was designed for a guy who was 6' 6"

Don't underestimate the power of the dark side
I guess the guy didn't publicise it enough. If what the article says is correct, the seller was a private collector as opposed to Lucasarts or some associated outfit or licensed seller who will tend to get the word out there that they are selling movie merchandise.

I'm not much shorter than that, I could probably pull it off. If you buy it send a PM my way
I just hope the auctioneer said "Right, then we have the Darth Vader costume. We'll start the bidding at 160,000, do I hear 160,000?"...crickets chirp..."C'mon people, 160,000? Anyone?"
His assistant whispers "I don't think anyone wants it."
"I find your lack of faith disturbing."

I'm 6' 3", that' like an 8cm difference. I could probably wear it.

Stuff like this isn't for wearing, it's for keeping on a mannequin in an airtight display case inside a safe inside a vault which is inside another safe inside another display case.
That kind of thing.

It would be retarded to buy if you didn't have money to blow, because it's just a costume afterall
