The human spirit knows no bounds. According to the BBC, a Swedish man somehow survived a horrendous ordeal in temperatures that were as low as 22 degrees below zero. The 45-year-old had been trapped inside his car beneath the snow in northern Sweden since Dec. 19.
Swedish authorities found him weak and emaciated, unable to mumble more than a few words. He was found by snowmobilers near Umea who thought they'd come upon a wreck until they dug their way to the window and saw movement inside, according to Vasterbotten Courier newspaper.
The man had no food and survived by drinking the melted snow. Police say is no reason to doubt his story and he is recovering at Umea University Hospital and said to be doing well considering the circumstances.
A rescue team member remarked, "Just incredible that he's alive considering that he had no food, but also since it's been really cold for some time after Christmas."
Doctors at Umea University Hospital said humans can typically survive without food for four weeks, but the man "probably survived by going into a dormant-like state."
Physician Stefan Branth stated, "A bit like a bear that hibernates. Humans can do that. He probably had a body temperature of around 31 degrees (Celsius) which the body adjusted to. Due to the low temperature, not much energy was used up."
It isn't yet known why or how the man ended up in his predicament, but there he certainly showcases the strong human spirit and the amazing ability for people to do what it takes to survived.
A 56-year-old Canadian woman was stranded in the rugged wilderness of Nevada's Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest last March, the Telegraph reported. Her husband disappeared when he went to find help, but Rita Chretien survived on melted snow and trail mix as she sat trapped in her van for 45 days before she was rescued.
In 2006, the Associated Press reported Washington state resident Daryl Blake Jane became trapped in his Jeep Cherokee on a remote road west of Mount Adams. The 37-year-old survived on rice cakes and banana chips and a small amount of drinking water. When it ran out he drank from puddles and spent a lot of time meditating in his sleeping bag.
After two weeks with no sign of an impending rescue Jane began writing goodbye letters when he was found by a snowmobile-aided search party. The man was weak and exhausted but had no severe frostbite and ultimately came through with flying colors. Tim Wilkins, the man's uncle remarked, "No one could really believe it. I don't think anyone's ever lasted in freezing temperatures that long."
Stories like these remind us to appreciate every moment we have on this planet as well as being a great reminder of the incredible human spirit.

Scorpions can live 1 year without water. The human body is shit in comparison to most other animals. The only good thing we have is our confirmed sentience (obviously).
