China announced plans to build a 60-ton space station, made up of three capsules, and develop a cargo spaceship to transport supplies. It is to be completed around 2020.
The 18.1-meter-long core module, with a maximum diameter of 4.2 meters and a launch weight of 20 to 22 tons, will be launched first. The two experiment modules will then blast off to dock with the core module. Each laboratory module is 14.4 meters long, with the same maximum diameter and launch weight of the core module. "The 60-ton space station is rather small compared to the International Space Station (419 tons), and Russia's Mir Space Station (137 tons) which served between 1996 and 2001," said Pang Zhihao, a researcher and deputy editor-in-chief of the monthly magazine, Space International. "But it is the world's third multi-module space station, which usually demands much more complicated technology than a single-module space lab," he said. The office also said that China will develop a cargo spaceship, with a maximum diameter of 3.35 meters and a launch weight less than 13 tons, to transport supplies and lab facilities to the space station. Pang said it is the first time that the office confirmed plans to build a cargo spaceship, which is vital for long-term space missions.
One large Bigelow Aerospace inflatable module launched via Spacex Falcon Heavy would probably launch a larger space station at lower cost. So commercially available space station capabilities could exceed what China is planning before 2020. Bigelow is making inflatable space stations to other countries
Source: http://nextbigfuture.com/2011/04/china-announces-new-60-ton-space.html
Looks spacious.
Very nice, we need more of these projects. Technically you could build a whole city in orbit.
Would be really cool if they looked towards the private space corporations.
How many people will man it?
There's a chink in the hull! (User was banned for this post ("Racism" - Swebonny))
"I'm sorry, but SpaceX had one of the best proposals of all time," Mars, man. Get investing China!
Eudoxia, I noticed your threads very commonly have an astronomy theme. :iia:

Why cant all space endeavours be done by the world collectively :(
China doesnt seem to limit the use of lead products, mercury contaminated products, asbestos, and many other toxic materials. I hope they do so with a space station because otherwise we're gonna have a lot of sick people.

Yes China, does limit the use of dangerous chemicals and toxic materials. It's like generalizing the whole UK because of the oil spills caused by BP. And finally, please use your brain this is a project they probably are going to throw in a few billion dollars. They aren't going to save money by using lead paint or using toy plastic.
Talk about living back in time.
You did say
Would be really cool if they looked towards the private space corporations.
And the funny thing is those private companies in China use toxic materials because its cheaper.
If you read the article, then you would know that I referred to the private space corporations, which I also mentioned in the post (the word "space"), aka SpaceX and Bigelow. It seemed to be that you believed that using toxic materials and poison is all fine in China. Edit: Heh, but I don't claim that it can be overlooked. China has had several scandals caused basically by greedy owners. You know, capitalism meets "communism" ;)

Yeah, but most the people that have been caught doing that stuff has been executed. Quite harsh, but then it's China we're talking about. I mean it's not like the government likes that the people are doing that. It harms people and only adds up to the already bad image that China got. Some examples (not a flattering list): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_safety_incidents_in_the_People%27s_Republic_of_China
China's motto: First make fakes to get the money, then make the real The government does crack down on these schemes, and yeah heads roll
Good. If more contries were to do this it'd start a global trend, accelerating us towards that sci-fi future we're all hoping for

Hopefully they won't just blow it up if everything goes tits up. We've got enough space debris as it is.
What is the point of the ISS then (International Space Station)
What is the point of the ISS then (International Space Station)
I think one of the reasons is that China isn't allowed into the ISS project. I don't know if research information from the space stations are shared throughout the world or only within the group of countries involved in ISS, but I guess the Chinese also wants to do some own experiments.

Thats kind of the point of scientific research.
Damn commies want to put lasers in space and kill democracy! :bahgawd:
I can already smell the formaldehyde.
I don't care what country or company goes to space and builds space stations or builds shit on another planets, because it's all humans doings. Can't see anyone else doing that kinda shit. Only there is the money, and money making, and in space it gets even more difficult or.. you know, the passports and the bureaucracy and thing. But that's looking too far ahead in the future.
Unfortunately it will fall back down to Earth because it is made with cut-out molds.
