• US Nuclear Sub navigator crashes his submarine - while listening to his iPod
A US nuclear submarine rammed another ship causing nearly US$90million ($96.4 million) damage - while its navigator was listening to his iPod. The Sun reports sailors aboard the USS Hartford had also rigged up loudspeakers so they could play music on duty. Sonar operators and radio men were missing from their posts and others drove the attack sub while "with one hand on the controls and their shoes off", an official report said. The report slammed the navigator, who was listening to his iPod in his cabin while revising for an exam at the time. The captain, Commander Ryan Brookhart, was relieved of his duties after the US Navy found that more than 30 errors - including "an informal atmosphere" and "a weak command" - led to the "avoidable accident". Fifteen sailors on the Hartford were injured when it hit the transport ship USS New Orleans in the Persian Gulf in March 2009. Navy chiefs approved the huge $US87 million repair bill for the Hartford and another $US2.3 million for the New Orleans.
source God bless America
Glad to see the commander was removed from his position. It sounds like he was doing a terrible job.
They were listening to the Crash Test Dummies.
I wonder what he was listening to.

It's the Sun Read the article, everyone. Although it is still a legitimate news piece. On topic-er How can you do that badly at Navigating a submarine, listening to music is no excuse.

[img_thumb]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/df/USS_Hartford_(SSN_768)_damage.jpg[/img_thumb] I can't find any good pictures of the ship it hit.
This reminds me of the movie, where some guy gets a really old Submarine and he has to get to New York without bring caught during a Military exercise. its p.funny.
Here's a picture of what the new orleans looks like, before damage anyway. : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:USS_New_Orleans;10091811.jpg
That is a badass ship. [editline]03:55AM[/editline] This submarine has a bad history. I got this incident mixed up with another one from a while back, picture wise.
He would not approve.
Sean Connery would turn into James Bond and kick ass.
Sean Connery would turn into James Bond and kick ass.
Turn INTO? I'm sorry, but he always IS Bondage. Christ, look at the buckling at that lower join... That hit must have stopped the sub dead on impact - depending on how fast they were going, that could have been one seriously jarring impact.
Turn INTO? I'm sorry, but he always IS Bondage.
Bondage? uhh
rammed another ship
hahahahaha why wasn't he fired after the first time?
hahahahaha why wasn't he fired after the first time?
I think you misunderstood. They mean he rammed a ship other than the one he was driving.
I think you misunderstood. They mean he rammed a ship other than the one he was driving.
Oh ok.
He chipped the paint as well. Hmm, since it's a stealth vehicle you could just use a sharpie to touch it up. No one will notice....
He chipped the paint as well. Hmm, since it's a stealth vehicle you could just use a sharpie to touch it up. No one will notice....
No what are you talking about? The enemy's radars will pick up the sharpie ink and sink the sub
I like how they focus on the "listening to iPod" aspect, without paying much attention to the "was in his cabin" aspect.
No what are you talking about? The enemy's radars will pick up the sharpie ink and sink the sub
Damn commies detecting our Sharpie ink.
