Lee Kuan Yew, the statesman who transformed Singapore from a small port city into a wealthy global hub, has died at the age of 91. Mr Lee served as the city-state's prime minister for 31 years, and continued to work in government until 2011. Highly respected as the architect of Singapore's prosperity, Mr Lee was also criticised for his iron grip on power. Mr Lee passed away peacefully at the Singapore General Hospital at 03:18 local time on Monday (19:18 GMT on Sunday).
Source: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-32012346 This makes me sad.
Rest in peace, man.
RIP, honestly I thought he'd still live to see SG50 though.
RIP. while he may be a dick sometimes, he bought this nation from third to first world.
Rest in peace, Sir, we hardly Yew ya.
His legacy is kind of complicated. On one hand he was an extremely effective leader, one of the best we've ever seen. Amazing economic growth. On the other hand he was autocratic and used policies that could not be replicated in any state larger than a city. He also said in an interview that he regrets giving women rights because it "harmed our Eastern culture"
Residents and economical partners of Singapore have much to be thankful for this politician. His biographies are really worth a read and any serious politician should study his history and achievements in Singapore.
