Are there any singers here? If so, post a video of your singing and we'll give constructive criticism.
Since nobody is posting someone I'll post a fun thing I did with a friend of mine. We're both pianists, but we had access to an electric guitar so we decided we'd make a kind of punk rock song parody fun thing. I played some guitar and he played the bass on the same guitar. So made this "song" for fun and then I started singing and we recorded it, added distortion and we were pleased with the results. Note, this is not our genre and this was just for fun, so excuse our crappy content, hehe.

You know, I think your vocals would fit in very well with even heavier distorted guitars, I'm thinking fuzz type of distortion, or even some distortion on the vocals itself to give them more grit.

I'm going to buy a sound interface + mic soon and then I'll record something serious!
i wish i could sing but my voice is terrible for it

That was a sympathy agree. I have no idea what you sound like.
I seem to suffer from some kind of mental block where I can only sing if I'm sure nobody else can hear me (while driving, for example.) That and my voice is way too weak/off :(

My voice just isn't cut out for it I think.

That's just my talking voice, but you can see it doesn't fit what I'd like to sing at all, and it just never works out and I can't find a starting point, I don't think I've been developed for it.

I think your voice sounds fine. Most people don't like how their own voice sounds.

Both your voices sound great and it doesn't even matter how your speaking voice sounds. My speaking voice sounds completely different from my singing voice:
http://vocaroo.com/i/s04IvYjhU1qr
Your voice is an instrument that you can control, but you need to control it first. Your vocal chords are muscles that you can train stronger and train more coordination too. Your timbre changes throughout the training, you will most certainly not sound the same after having trained it for such a long time. It's completely bullshit when people say that singing comes naturally. Most singers are hard workers who train really hard to get a great singing voice. Of course there are exceptions, but this should not discourage you.

Where should I start though
Where should I start though
Several ways to start. You can try to identify what can of voice you have:
Bass
Baritone
Tenor
Counter-Tenor
After that you can work on your vocal range, vocal timbre, vocal agility and vocal control!
The first and most important thing is to learn to breathe again, when you breathe in you want your lungs to fill out, starting near the stomach. Your shoulders shouldn't move one itty bitty bit when you breathe properly, so start with breathing in in such a way that your stomach expands, that way you know you're getting a full capacity-inhale.

So how does one go about identifying these properly?
So how does one go about identifying these properly?
Well it's really difficult, but bass people are pretty obvious, extremely low range. Baritone and tenor is a bit harder. If you can sing really comfortably from chest voice to falsetto and back without ever having to train it, you're more likely to be tenor.

So, let's say I'm like a low pitch (baritone maybe?) and then a song is sung at a bit of a higher pitch, should I be put off of trying to sing it? Like, is it possible for it to sound good out of the range of the original artist?

Yes, it is possible. You just have to arrange the entire piece to the range you can sing. I mean I know lots of people who do covers and just slap a capo on to their guitar so they can play and sing the song in their respected range.

Sort of an odd question, but what about if you can change from falsetto the chest relatively easily, but have harder time going from chest to falsetto? I'm not real heavily educated on singing and don't actually know what my own vocal range is, which is why I ask.
Hey guys made a new cover

It's possible, with enough training even a bass can sing tenor songs. However, you need to do a lot of vocal range exercises.

It's definitely easier to go from falsetto to chest voice. You're probably a baritone, but you can practice it! Look at Chris Martin, I believe he is a baritone too and he is just the falsetto king!
I definitely haven't had any training or anything, but do I have potential? :v:

worst thing I have ever heard in my entire life
But seriously, you do have a naturally good singing voice. I wish I could sing like that with so much control.

A couple of my friends who have gone through vocal lessons sounded a bit like you when they first started, but after the lessons, their pitch control and tone was a million times better than it was before.
Since you already have a decent voice, taking lessons would immensely improve it! And if you can't get lessons, then just look up youtube videos and practice on keeping your notes steady, work on vibrato, etc.
