At 0630 Hours, Sea Shepherd Captain Peter Bethune of the vessel Ady Gil, which was sunk by the Japanese security ship Shonan Maru 2, boarded the whaling ship to conduct a citizen’s arrest of the skipper of the Shonan Maru 2. Captain Bethune boarded the whaling ship under cover of darkness from a Jet Ski as the Shonan Maru 2 was traveling at 14 knots in the Southern Ocean. His first attempt failed when he fell into the frigid waters, but despite this the crew of the Shonan Maru 2 failed to see him and he successfully boarded the whaler without detection. Captain Bethune’s breaching the security of the whaling fleet security vessel remained undetected for one and a half hours. At 0800 Hours, once the sun had risen, Captain Bethune calmly knocked on the bridge wing door, entered the wheelhouse, and presented himself to the Captain of Shonan Maru 2 where he informed the skipper that he was under arrest for the sinking of the Sea Shepherd ship Ady Gil on January 6th, 2010. All radio communications with Peter Bethune ceased at 0805. The Shonan Maru 2 did acknowledge that Bethune was onboard. The Sea Shepherd ships Steve Irwin and Bob Barker continue to pursue the Japanese whaling ship Nisshin Maru eastward across the Southern Ocean. The ships are presently south of Australia’s Heard Island.
Source: http://www.seashepherd.org/news-and-media/news-100215-2.html Once on board the captain said:
"I am here to arrest you. I am requesting that you transfer now to the Steve Irwin, where we will take you into custody, and we will deliver you to the Maritime Safety Authority and the New Zealand Police once we reach Wellington (New Zealand)." "If you refuse to be arrested, then I am requesting that you deliver me to Wellington (New Zealand). Having sunk my vessel, and with our issuing of a mayday call, you have an obligation under maritime law to provide me with safe passage back to land." "I will refuse to be handed over to any Sea Shepherd vessel. I will also refuse to be handed over to any New Zealand or Australian Coastguard, Customs or Naval vessel. I will only leave the Shonan Maru when you transfer with me to the Steve Irwin, or when we arrive on land, be it New Zealand or Australia." "I am enclosing an invoice for US$3m, representing the new replacement cost of the Ady Gil. You are responsible for the collision and as such, you are also responsible for paying for its replacement." "I commit to you that while I am on your vessel, that I will not impede or disrupt your crew and their activities."
Source: http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2010/02/14/18637844.php?show_comments=1 Full Letter and the invoice can be read here: http://www.seashepherd.org/news-and-media/news-100215-1.html Sea Shepherd announced plans to rebuild the Ady Gil a few days after the crash and were donated 1m to do so. They still need more money to be able to buy a new ship however. Here we go again... Again...
The Sea Shepherd ships Steve Irwin and Bob Barker...
What. Also, what makes this guy think he can perform a citizens arrest in international waters, how does that even work.
What. Also, what makes this guy think he can perform a citizens arrest in international waters, how does that even work.
They name their ships after the ships benefactors. Bob Barker donated some 4 million dollars to them so they named the ship after him. Ady Gil invested in the speed boat so they named it after her (lol your investment is now at the bottom of the ocean). Steve Irwin was named in commemoration for Steve Irwin who was going to go on "tour" with them had he not died... Technically their in Australian/New Zealand waters, so in theory a New Zealander could preform a citizens arrest.
Oh boy!

[editline]yeah[/editline] I see now, I looked up a political map that shows where countries lay "claims" in the region. I suppose it makes some sense then. I still think the concept of citizens arrest is odd though.
What do they think they're doing now?
What do they think they're doing now?
I often ask myself that question. What I do know is that season 3, with 1 sunken ship, 1 major collision, and now this, is going to be one hell of a watch.
God damnit, the Japanese should just shoot them already.
God damnit, the Japanese should just shoot them already.
That's murder.
"I am enclosing an invoice for US$3m, representing the new replacement cost of the Ady Gil. He's the one responsible for colliding this beautiful, beautiful ship, then breaking it apart to garner news attention. oh god, i wanna punch him.
That's murder.
Thank you for pointing that out
I hope the captain of the whaling vessel turned to his first mate and said something along the lines of "Have the crew grab some rope, a gag, and something very heavy. Then tie this man up to said heavy object, gag him, and throw him off my ship. I'm going to go take a bath with my toy whaling ship and rubber whale. Ohh, and set his invoice on fire and search the ship for any more stowaways."
:hurr:
I don't like Sea Shepherd, is that a problem?
They're gonna Keel-Haul the sucker
I find it funny how the Japanese just detained him.
They're gonna Keel-Haul the sucker
That would be good television if it was on the show.
I don't like Sea Shepherd, is that a problem?
Yeah, 'cause we all know disliking something is grounds for murder. Angsty much?
Yeah, 'cause we all know disliking something is grounds for murder. Angsty much?
It is when it comes to them. It has nothing to do with angst, I just don't like them and really couldn't care less if they all fell over dead. I'd just like to get some entertainment out of it if at all possible.
Is the bitch kidding? He's the one responsible for colliding this beautiful, beautiful ship, then breaking it apart to garner news attention. oh god, i wanna punch him.
That's hard to say. The way I see it the Whaling ship should be held responsible because they deliberately came up to the Ady Gil then turned away at the last moment. This whole incident could have been avoided if the Japanese did not come after an Idle boat. Before crash: During Crash(3 points of view(ignore the music)): If you can't see that the Whaling ship is doing a hard turn toward the Ady Gil then you have no sense of direction. The Ady Gil may have thrusted forward at the last second but this is anecdotal because the Yushin Maru is clearly coming at them while they were idol. At that point the collision was inevitable. The Japanese are throwing the fist this time.
I find it funny how the Japanese just detained him.
I'm sure he knew that they would and he wants to be a martyr.
I find it funny how the Japanese just detained him.
Of course they did, what else would they do?
"Halt criminal scum! I place you under citizen's arrest because you rammed and sank a ship that was harassing you and pestering you illegally!"
It is when it comes to them. It has nothing to do with angst, I just don't like them and really couldn't care less if they all fell over dead. I'd just like to get some entertainment out of it if at all possible.
Damn barbarian. Just because you don't like them doesn't mean they deserve to die. [editline]06:55AM[/editline]
"Halt criminal scum! I place you under citizen's arrest because you rammed and sank a ship that was harassing you and pestering you illegally!"
Pay the fine or go to jail.
Damn barbarian. Just because you don't like them doesn't mean they deserve to die.
Not barbarian, just heartless. Is that so wrong? Better off without them.
"Halt criminal scum! I place you under citizen's arrest because you rammed and sank a ship that was harassing you and pestering you illegally!"
The boat was idol and not harassing anything at the time.
The boat was idol and not harassing anything at the time.
they thrusted forward into the vessel's line of path...
they thrusted forward into the vessel's line of path...
Only after the Japanese came at them with no apparent reason while they were idol. I still think the crash would have been inevitable because of the Japanese' actions.
The boat was idol and not harassing anything at the time.
That's like harassing a bunch of jocks at your school, throwing shit at them, following them around then expecting not to get your ass whipped
Only after the Japanese came at them with no apparent reason while they were idol. I still think the crash would have been inevitable because of the Japanese' actions.
most likely trying to get close enough to hose the bastards down, not trying to ram it, they're smart enough to know that shit looks like it can ram.
