An employee noticed last week that the sword was cut from a statue of a Civil War artillery officer, the (Springfield) State Journal-Register reported Saturday. Officials think the sword was stolen sometime between September and early November. Nothing had been stolen from the Springfield site, which is the final resting place of Abraham Lincoln, since the sword on the same statue was taken more than 100 years ago, said Dave Blanchette, a spokesman for the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. Then, the sword was bronze. “We just cannot imagine why someone would even think about doing it, let alone climb up the steps and actually do it,” Blanchette said. The statue is on the tomb’s balcony, which is closed to visitors. Workers likely would have spotted a thief during the day, but no one guards the tomb at night, Blanchette said. A security guard was posted overnight after a 1987 incident in which racist graffiti was spray-painted on the tomb. Five teenagers were arrested. But budget cuts ended that position, he said. The rest of the statue was unharmed. Officials plan to fix the statue, Blanchette said.
Picture of the Tomb: Sounds like the beginning of a historical-thriller novel or something.
It was Nicolas Cage. National Treasure 3: Where Is Our Funding Coming From?
... Lincoln had a sword? Well at least they didn't take his beard or hat.
Sounds like the beginning of a historical-thriller novel or something.
No it sounds like ignorant fucktards who have no respect for the tomb of one the most accomplished human beings in history who desecrated it for a quick buck.
I think they most likely melted it down and sold it
What happened was the guy who stole it 100 years ago bragged to his family. It then became a family legend, grandpa pulling the 'prank' of a lifetime. 100 years later, his great-great-great grandson who is a methhead hears that story again. He figures "I need to score some meth, I can sell copper, and it's a family tradition, why not?" and there you go.
Copper is still valueable? It's been dropping in price for four months now.
No it sounds like ignorant fucktards who have no respect for the tomb of one the most accomplished human beings in history who desecrated it for a quick buck.
I'm sure he wouldn't give a fuck if a piece of copper off one of many statues of him was stolen.
... Lincoln had a sword? Well at least they didn't take his beard or hat.
The sword's from one of the statues above his tomb, as you can see in the picture. Also, Lincoln's hat is in the Smithsonian.
Who even cares, its just a statue.
Thought it was a sword Lincoln actually owned, that would be bad Italics
Who even cares, its just a statue.

I'm sure he wouldn't give a fuck if a piece of copper off one of many statues of him was stolen.
Wow, this is just a ridiculous argument. It doesn't matter what the person would think of it, it is the fact that someone stole something off a dead person's grave site, let alone a great advocator of freedom and a person who helped an entire group of people move towards equality in our nation. It is the principle of the action that is disgusting and I cannot fathom how you could not see that. I know you are from a different country so his impact might not be so great to you but I would expect you to at least understand the respect we should give to the dead. How about I find one of your dead relatives and steal their tombstone or the flowers off their grave?

Being Canadian is almost wholy irrelevant. I can plainly see what a blantant disrespect this is to not only US history, but world history aswell. All for a quick pay-off.
And I could not care less, just like I would not care if they stole something off one of our PM's statues.
And I could not care less, just like I would not care if they stole something off one of our PM's statues.
What if it was stolen from the tomb of one of the most (if not THE most) respected and honored leaders of your nation, culturally, politically, and otherwise?
No matter how many times I look at that title, I still think it says "The Sword of Link has been stolen" and I keep thinking someone stole the Master Sword.
And I could not care less, just like I would not care if they stole something off one of our PM's statues.
You're blind to not know how good Lincoln was at all.
And I could not care less, just like I would not care if they stole something off one of our PM's statues.
So you're indifferent? Great job coming into a story you couldn't care about. Your reasoning for posting in this thread was what exactly? If you're indifferent you're just a wanna-be edgy kid trying to get attention by acting like it doesn't matter. If you're not just an edgy kid you're just truely an idiot for posting about something you don't have any interest in. You're sure showing everyone how intelligent you are.
Who even cares, its just a statue.
"Yeah! who cares about history and monuments! fuck ancient rome, that dusty old shit! fight the power!"
I think they most likely melted it down and sold it
I would think it would sell for more if intact.
I don't know how to break it to you guys, but I don't think this is that big a deal. On one hand, the thieves defiled a presidential tomb. On the other hand, I did not know about this tomb until this story, I do know that the emancipation proclamation was horribly stunted in its reach and effect, and I dont think that people should have monuments to anyone or anything, other than ideals. Before anyone says that I have no right being in this thread I would just like to say that the title makes this sound like way more of a news story then it is.
I don't know how to break it to you guys, but I don't think this is that big a deal.
If you are black, Hispanic or any other race than White you would understand how important this guy clearly is. If not you'd be back in the 1800's with slavery, poverty, or rejection from stores and areas that only allowed a certain race, I'd doubt you'd be laughing, but I ain't bashing you. But if you did something that changed an entire nation it would be very depressing to be forgotten right afterwards.

Also Abraham Lincoln was not the only person involved in freeing the slaves, and even after all slaves were free, black people still could not vote, could be rejected from stores, got killed if they entered certain towns, and to this day have a higher rate of poverty than white people. He was an important person, sure, but he wasn't alone. As for the last sentence of your post, I would be surprised if most people could think of a quote from Frederick Douglass, a man who was arguably more important than Lincoln in the abolitionist movement, can you?
Its a piece of copper. The only reason it got stolen was because your government fucked up and due to budget cuts the security guard got layed off.
damn thieves guild
Its a piece of copper. The only reason it got stolen was because your government fucked up and due to budget cuts the security guard got layed off.
hey dude no one cares about you not caring, it was a shitty thing to do, there's no two ways about it.
hey dude no one cares about you not caring, it was a shitty thing to do, there's no two ways about it.
And everybody cares about you not caring about me not caring about the subject.
hey dude no one cares about you not caring, it was a shitty thing to do, there's no two ways about it.
This is an internet forum, people have a right to post what they think on the subject, even if no one cares.

Maybe if it was a war memorial.
