Escape from New York is a 1981 American science fiction action film directed and scored by John Carpenter. He also co-wrote the screenplay with Nick Castle. The film is set in the near future in a crime-ridden United States that has converted Manhattan Island in New York City into a maximum security prison. Ex-soldier and legendary fugitive "Snake" Plissken (Kurt Russell) is given 24 hours to find the President of the United States, who has been captured by inmates after Air Force One crashed on the island. Carpenter originally wrote the film in the mid-1970s as a reaction to the Watergate scandal, but no studio wanted to make it because Carpenter proved unable to articulate just how this film could relate to the Watergate scandal. After the success of Halloween, he had enough influence to get the film made and shot most of it in St. Louis, Missouri, where significant portions of the city were used in place of New York City.[3] The film's total budget was estimated to be US$6 million.[1] It was a commercial hit, grossing over $50 million worldwide.[2] It has since developed its own cult following, particularly around the anti-hero Plissken. A sequel, Escape from L.A., was released in 1996. It has one of the best movie themes of the 1980's and was composed by Carpenter himself. If you haven't seen this film I recommend you get your mates around, bring drink and watch it, its a real decent piece of action. For one thing it is a piece of retro 80's dystopian future, complete with tinted visor cops, Issac Hayes in a admiral uniform, bizarre timeline "the year is 1997" green wire-frame graphics and a graffiti covered World Trade center. This was also the film that inspired Kojima to create the character of solid snake in metal gear solid. Added to my flick list.
One of my favourites. Carpenter's best next to In The Mouth of Madness. [editline]20th December 2010[/editline] But you can only boast about having seen this if you can boast about having not seen the sequel.

It was ridiculous and had terrible CGI and hamfisted social commentary. But it also had Snake. And Bruce Campbell. And Steve Buscemi. The original was still better of course.
Fuck yeah, Kurt Russel.
Soo does Metal Gear Solid make references to this movie? I've always wondered that.
Soo does Metal Gear Solid make references to thing movie? I've always wondered that.
Yes. Also, I love this movie.
Soo does Metal Gear Solid make references to this movie? I've always wondered that.
Yes, the name Snake for Solid Snake and later the codename Pliskin. Solid Snake was also based on Kurt Russel and Mel Gibson physically i think.
Plus Big Boss's eyepatch.

It's not a better movie, but it's more fun to watch.

Bit of a resemblance.
i always wondered weather snake for the Simpsons was partly based on snake plisken
Probably not. They'd have to give him an eye-patch.
[img_thumb]http://cdn.complex.com/blogs/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/snake.jpg[/img_thumb] Bit of a resemblance.
Snake IS based on EFNY's Snake Plisken. Hideo Kojima has stated more than once that Escape from New York is one of his favorite films and that the character of Solid Snake was heavily inspired by Snake plisken. Hell, as much as I love MGS, the entire plot and structure of MGS1 is pretty much a rip off of EFNY.
Love this movie, it really got me into John Carpenter's films. So far I've seen The Thing, Escape from LA and Prince of Darkness. What should I watch next?
No love for The Thing? :(
Plenty of love for The Thing. I used to run a fansite for it. But I've just watched it too much. I've watched it every Christmas for the last 6 years and know the entire script!
