Steam Controller: The quintessential Valve product

Made a new video, filming the controller was harder than one might think.

the steampad is literally the best thing for gta5 possible
a controller with the accuracy of a stick for driving and still be virtually as quick and accurate as a mouse.
I've played GTA5. Dark Souls 2 and 3. Doom. Sniper Elite 3. Witcher 3. UT99. Garrys mod (Fully working profile, this is the one game I don't thing will work with it in sandbox, but it's perfect for a numpad style command pad). Fallout 4. MGS5.
That and a bunch of other games, but most genres I care for, and it works insanely will in them really.

Yeah, it's pretty great. More control over driving gives a little bit of an advantage when doing missions in GTA Online
The process you went through to put together that mod is very interesting, and the end product is gorgeous, it could easily have shipped with HL2 or been added in a steam controller update. It's so disappointing that they don't have a way to import glyphs or change the color via hex when that was available all the way back in Half Life 1 Deathmatch's spray configuration...
It's just a shame that Valve have all these fantastic ideas but never really expand on them or move onto the next thing while leaving previous ones in the dust. Reminds me of a lot of good, short-lived Google services.
Here's a picture of the touch menu I made with the "bind use weapon_x" system that I made:

It works pretty well.
Also, Valve has said that they're going to rework the preset sharing system.
Also, Halfer has also made Black Mesa/HL1 icons. You can find them here: https://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1498922&p=50414635&viewfull=1#post50414635
You can also find the config that I made here: http://www.steamcontrollerdb.com/config/half-life-2/sombrezes-bindings/5873
My configuration also includes an action set for driving so you can use the gyroscope.
Tbh I hope they add Analog ABXY buttons so we can get hard/soft press out of those
combine this with long press activators. Hard and Soft + short and long = 8 short and 8 long press buttons.
I THINK the original xbox had this, but no games used it except like 2. It'd work however if you could just program it in. You could have dark souls 3 with an ABXY control lay out where x is left and y is right, with hard/soft presses, etc.
Oh, my god, I'm so happy you mentioned that GTA V mod, I had no idea that existed. It was something I was severely dreading, but now I'm pretty excited.
Any idea about others?
Wonderful, your HL2 icons come at a perfect time; I'm right in the middle of re-running the HL series and I'm using the Steam Controller for HL2/EP1/EP2. I didn't even know you could set up the touch pad like that. Thank you!
Question for the thread after they saw the video, if valve created a mouse, what feature or features would it make worth while to use? also if you feel comfortable valve hardware expanding to develop mice?
An example is perhaps the mouse be like an apple magic mouse but have feedback like with the gamepad's vibration system over your fingers?

Lack of analog face buttons is one of the biggest things I dislike about the controller. It really hinders the emulation possibilities the controller has. I guess that's because XInput doesn't support it? But hardware support "just in case" would have really future proofed the device in case somebody figured out how to do it.
I often hear that one of the only "big" games that used analog face buttons was MGS3, but games like GTA also benefited from them (especially the missions where you have to tail a car)
Wow, Steam controller only works with game on Steam? That's pretty disappointing, I'd love to use it to play Diablo 3 and other games that are off-steam.

It should work, you just have to run it through Steam by adding it as a non-steam game.
this is a really rudimentary question but I just got my steam controller a few weeks ago in the recent sale so I'm entirely new to a ton of this stuff - for Sunshine & Wind Waker, did you just add an executable to Steam for Dolphin as a non-steam game or is that a third party deal for Dolphin itself? I didn't realize that the Steam Controller could possibly do emulated games!

also the little minimod you put together for HL2 is amazing, good job man.
Completely agree on the sharing system. it's really, really counterintuitive. I was quite shocked at the fact that all I had was a basic description on the main page and had to export the config and examine it first instead of having a bit more of a complex description. not terribly friendly for new users, so I'm glad to hear they'll be making some changes

I got the Steam controller on launch and I have not been disappointed. I don't use it very often, but I've used it as a replacement in the games I commonly played with a gamepad, and have not looked back. Being able to configure it on the fly made it so much easier to use, and that makes it easier to change it to make it more comfortable. I haven't gone back to even using my old gamepad.
Once I learned about the gyro that's when I knew this thing would be better than any traditional gamepad. The level of control and fine tuning that can provide works wonders for just what kind of controller the Steam controller is. I still agree that the Steam controller is "better than a gamepad, but not better than KB+M", but the controller never set out to replace the KB+M, it set out to provide an alternative that's "like" KB+M, and in my eyes it succeeded that goal. In fact, probably surpassed, just with how much you can actually change. Being able to switch touchpad modes on the fly for example. That alone vastly changes how this controller operates.
That mod you made there looks really cool. I didn't know you could go that far into it. I should try to experiment more with mine.

I think it could stand to be a little smaller and less bulky, but otherwise it's very good.

Like DaMastez says, you can use Steam's "Add A Non-Steam Game" function to make it work with other games. Steam will even search for community configs based on the name you assign to that game, so even if you launch something like WoW over Steam, you'll be able to browse community configurations.
If you don't launch a game through Steam, your controller will simply keep outputting according to its "Desktop" configuration.
Yup, even if you can't add a game onto Steam you can just configure the desktop configuration to a game that you want to play.
I haven't tried it yet, but I've heard that people have played games such as Halo 5: Forge Edition with the Steam Controller.
Note: The desktop configuration does not allow you to use touch menus, and it doesn't allow you to use controller inputs so you're stuck using keyboard and mouse inputs.

Here's 2 talks about the Steam Controller by Valve:
http://www.gdcvault.com/play/1023606
http://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/LarsDoucet/20161012/283057/Steam_Dev_Days_Steam_Controller.php
Sidenote: They should have demonstrated the gyro when they said "wanna step up your competitive game?" in the commercial using footage of CS:GO or TF2, and then used a game like Fallout 4 for the dual stage triggers.
Just came back from Steam Dev Days. They're pushing the controller really hard there, almost as much as VR for goodness sake, and that's a good thing. They gave everyone a gift bag with the controller, the link, and a shit load of accessories for the two. I'm assuming this is to get everyone who didn't have the controller on the train. I love using it just for day to day web browsing. I hope Valve introduces an easy way to use it outside of Steam based on what window is focused. I really want it to work with my game outside of Steam, but alas I must wait.
My only complaint is the poor d-pad. It's just not useable for platformers
I feel like an idiot, but what's that music around 1:50?
My only complaint is the poor d-pad. It's just not useable for platformers
Try setting the click to off, so that it's activated on touch.
Try playing around with the deadzone option.
The dpad is really good for platformers, but you have to set it up properly.
You're gonna have to get used to it though.
For me, I didn't need to get used to it since I've never played any type of platformer in my life and when I tried an Xbox controller, it just wasn't as good as the Steam Controller.
I feel like an idiot, but what's that music around 1:50?
It's "Groove Groove" by Kevin Macleod

You'd be surprised actually
It's not great, but you can always tweak it to work for you.
One of the weirdest setups you can do with it the controller is having the left track pad be movement and the right be mouse look but it works for games like DOOM I found.
I've not found a game that HASN'T worked well with the steam controller
only game I've had issues with is garrys mod and maybe space engineers, but even though games could technically work if you adjusted them enough, just not as well
though that's because Gmod and SpaceEng are insanely complex and built for a kb/m only

Enter The Gungeon doesn't seem to work very well with it.
I don't get why, it just doesn't. It's the only one.

According to my friend it doesn't work with undertale at all.
Which is funny because that game was the only reason he bought a steam controller.

It works just fine depending on what you're using it for. What was he trying to do with it?

Did he try using the gyro?
I think he just doesn't know how to configure it.

when I tried using mine for saints row gat out of hell, I mapped the mouse at the right trackpad, with the rest of the controller using normal button mapping (as is, emulating a controller), but the game didnt liked that combo, because everytime i moved the camera while moving, the camera would be janky as hell.

that's more the fault of the game not supporting mice + controllers at the same time, which really blows.
MGS5 and Fallout 4 both don't support that, so I end up having to like, awfully use keyboard only. Thankfully it works insanely well with just the keyboard set up to it but it takes time to properly map the shit properly.
