But let's not forget that Microsoft is still selling a gargantuan tower of operating systems every second—and it matches everything else combined. Dan Frommer put Microsoft's recently reported 525 million Windows 7 licenses in perspective:
Since then — October, 2009 — Apple has likely sold about 35 million Macs, possibly 250 million iOS devices, and Google has seen almost 250 million Android activations. (We’ll find out how Apple did over Christmas next Tuesday when it reports earnings.) So it’s pretty close, for context. But the PC market is shrinking and the smartphone and tablet markets are exploding. There have been a lot of Microsoft momentum stories recently, but a lot of it is theoretical. Windows 8 tablets can’t come soon enough, and Microsoft had better find real success with Nokia’s Windows phones, or growth could be elusive. Are you sure that people bought them?
Well it specifically marks 525 million licenses so I assume so.
Are you sure that people bought them?
Those who pirate Windows usually use WGA circumvention so it wouldn't be recorded as either a purchase or registration. So the numbers would be fairly accurate.
-woops, wrong data.-
Windows sells more copies than all this stuff together, but apple makes more money with the iPhone alone than all of Microsoft together.
Yeah, no not at all.
honestly, I'm very happy with my Windows 7. I rarely have issues, if I do, I Google it, get it fixed, most of them are tiny or self-created.
I wonder what the estimate would be for pirated stuff.
wow that's about 1/12 of the world's population in windows 7
Windows 7 is by far the best OS microsoft has made. Especially after vista.
There are also schools and businesses registering many Windows machines, so that helps boost the number.
All I'm seeing here is that Unix devices are outnumbering Windows 7 PCs. And this article doesn't include GPSs, set top boxes (Tivo, Roku, AppleTV, GoogleTV etc), or servers. Doesn't look good for Microsoft with the shrinking desktop market and an expanding mobile/embedded device market.
Maybe it might be because 95% of the mass population can't even imagine a PC without Windows? I don't know, just saying.
As could be seen with the iPad, the mobile devices are going to scale up to a larger size but still be portable enough and eventually replace many traditional desktop PCs. I'm talking about the PCs that people use for Facebook, email, web browsing. Microsoft probably has a few years after that to clutch onto workstations and gaming PCs, and then those will probably be replaced by Unix devices running ARM.
Not surprised. Win7 is a stable and polished OS. Runs well, looks modern, easy to use. What more do you want?

Never had issues with Vista. My performance was increased significantly with it, however a lot of people had issues. Luckily I didn't, though when W7 came out I upgraded to that immediately and never had a single issue and performance increased even more. Looking forward to W8 and what it has in store.

The only noticeable performance gain I got (that I remember) when switching from Vista to 7 was boot time, 7 boots MUCH faster.
What the fuck are you talking about, shrinking desktop market? A single fucking desktop OS just sold 525 million units in 3 years.
The Op states that the desktop market is shrinking and provides this link: http://www.splatf.com/2012/01/microsoft-form-factors/
No, Linux/Unix isn't going to magically take over, people aren't going to drop their already perfectly functioning PCs for a new computer they have to relearn.
That's not how it will happen. People will get used to their iPhones, iPads, or Android phones and tablets and want to use that as their desktop PC. So those devices will be scaled up to a laptop kind of like Chromebooks, or an iMac-like device with a big screen and an attachable keyboard and mouse.

Probably because companies like Dell license Windows 7 en masse.
With the introduction of tablets and smartphones, there are a lot of people who won't need a whole desktop anymore.
I can see a laptop replacing a desktop for the average computer user who mostly just uses it for surfing the web but definitely not a tablet or smartphone
With the introduction of tablets and smartphones, there are a lot of people who won't need a whole desktop anymore.
It'll take several years, I'd imagine.
I can see a laptop replacing a desktop for the average computer user who mostly just uses it for surfing the web but definitely not a tablet or smartphone
You don't need a whole laptop just to go to some webpage. A tablet does that perfectly.
proof that microsoft, is doing it right.
the consumer market has the largest amount of activations. businesses in general take a lot of time (years) before they upgrade to a new OS. xp is still more than 50% of all installed windows copies and it's likely that most of those are on government or business computers think of all the laptops that comes with windows 7 installed

Sorry to burst your bubble, but MS just sold 525 million licenses of W7 alone, stop telling yourself MS is going away.
