Top Gear UK go on a Ukrainian roadtrip in upcoming episode, end up in Chernobyl
In next week’s show, our intrepid hosts demonstrate their … intrepidity (it’s a word, honest, we looked it up) on a trip to Ukraine, a journey which ends up in the heart of Chernobyl. A reviewer for the Telegraph wrote that it is “undoubtedly one of the eeriest, most spine-chilling sequences I’ve seen on Top Gear – as the pair [Jeremy Clarkson and James May] drove around in the shadow of the devastated power station, their Geiger counters clicking like demented crickets.”

When the Top Gear trio visited Ukraine to film the episode, throngs of Ukrainian fans gathered outside of the triumvirate’s hotel in Kiev. One fan posted a photo of himself with Richard Hammond. “I live in Ukraine,” he wrote. “So you can imagine my surprise when I saw this man getting on board our domestic flight.”
I don't know if there are a lot of Top Gear FP fans on here, but I thought it was worth sharing.
Also a short interview from Clarkson on Chernobyl in that link which can't seem to be embedded here.
Wasn't this already aired?
aired on Sunday mate
That episode aired on Sunday, actually
You're almost a week late. :v:
So I'm assuming they made the trip many weeks ago, as is the case with most shows.

Top Gear episodes shown in Israel are on average 6 months behind those aired in the UK, pardon me for missing the release since the article itself was only posted yesterday, weirdly.
Oh well, nonetheless, perhaps some have missed it.

Series 21 Episode 3
They are broadcast a week later in the US and this is an article from BBC America so it's not late for us amerifats.
Really great episode, the entire trip was awesome
Great episode. I'm quite fascinated by Chernobyl so it was quite a treat to see the Top Gear guys go to Chernobyl.
Some of the crew decided to leave once they go to the border where they hand out Geiger counters in a different vehicle as shown and some of the assistant camera men had to go instead with the jeep back-door shut.
Are the long-term lasting effects really THAT bad? I've always wanted to visit one-day myself. I'd have happily have took the opportunity to visit.
It seems like they filmed this quite some time before the demonstrations and riots broke out. I'm still interested in seeing the episode anyway.
To be fair,it was an awesome episode
That dacia Sandero...*wolf whistle*

It's all staged. There's a picture out somewhere of the trio standing in front of the ferris wheel with what I assume is their tour guide, just milling about. All about that drama, after all.
I don't know why but I've always wanted to visit Chernobyl, it just seems like a fascinating place to go.

they made it more dramatic for the telly, there aren't really any lasting effects
i think i remember hearing that hammond went in too, whereas in the show he doesn't. they wouldn't have done it if it was dangerous, people go on tours to chernobyl all the time - even a couple of guys on here have been.

The radiation levels vary - in some places it can still be quite dangerous, while others are no more radioactive than, say, Denver (high-altitude cities get more space radiation, less air shielding) or any city near a natural uranium deposit. The danger is statistical - if it were inhabited, you'd see cancer rates dozens of times above normal, but a short visit is perfectly fine.
But those hotspots? They're not usually hot enough to be an immediate life risk, but they're definitely something to avoid. That's usually what the Geiger counters are for - avoiding the hotspots, not measuring the background level.
The reactor itself, IIRC, is still hot enough that a few seconds in there will kill you within a day. Obviously something you want to avoid doing.
The red forest is in there too I think, isn't that the most irradiated place on earth?
Jeremy and his Geiger counter...

The Dacia Sandaro is finally here!
Believe it or not, you can stand within a couple hundred feet outside certain areas of the nuclear plant and be safe.

No. They have public tours of Pripyat, and IIRC the amount of radiation exposure is about the same as a plane flight.

You're only allowed to follow the tour guides through special designated routes.

So hotspots are avoided by default.

The one thing about this episode I didn't like was that they played up the danger too much, they didn't mention that they offer tours and that's it's safe if you're just visiting.
But then again top gear is an entertainment show, not an educational documentary.
I'm disgusted by the fact that "UK" has to be added to the title to avoid confusion.
Please end the shit American version

believe it or not there are about a hundred workers working on and around the nuclear power plant erecting the next and (hopefully) permanent cover, really with the weather in chernobyl most of the radioactivity is inside the derlict buildings where the dust piled up, driving around out in the open won't do you that much harm
