His campaign manager said he had conceded victory to independent candidate, Alexander Van der Bellen.
The Austrian presidency is largely ceremonial but the vote had been seen as a sign of how well populist candidates might do in upcoming elections in the European Union.
The result is sure to be welcomed by establishment parties and officials in the EU.
Some good news to end this dogshit year.
Oh god, he lost the same election for the second time now. :v:
Still almost half the country voting for a far-right candidate, that says something.

It seems the world as well goes in that directions. Some portion lives in a time warp lives from centuries to a millennium into the past while other portions wish to go in the same direction.
I thought the results would be announced on Monday. Is it definitive?
fuck this country
Lovely. Atleast it keeps our minority in Innsbruck and Graz a bit more safer (hopefully).

Oh trust me, you guys are doing better you could ask for IMHO.
I saw election fraud live today too when they let someone vote who had all the wrong papers

Oh yeah, now you have someone in presidential office who literally doesn't give any shit about the democratic process and will block any government he doesn't like even though it was elected by the people. Great guy.
europe's doing weird stuff now
I saw election fraud live today too when they let someone vote who had all the wrong papers
Proof? I mean, if that was the case, the media surely would jump on it immediately - the vote was repeated because of errors after all.

Well it would certainly fucking help if the left would stop going extreme left. They don't seem to understand that they aren't losing voters because they're not left enough, but because they're going too far. There's growing opposition to the way they're handling the refugee crisis for example, but anytime you try and bring up that maybe we should put some limits on it you instantly get branded a racist.

I keep forgetting that Bernie Sanders on our side of the lake is considered moderate, probably even conservative to some of you guys.
It makes me shudder to think what kind of crazy we aren't hearing about from your side.

I wouldn't really consider FPÖ far right just because they are more farther right than SVÖ.
Soft euroscepticism and national conservatism are not extreme ideologies.

I think that's only barely true, at least in the country we both live in.

Being against arbitrary limits on immigration is not a extreme-left policy. Seriously, look up what the extreme-left actually is.

Bernie wouldn't be considered conservative at all, his views are almost exactly the same as the views of my country's socialist party. My country already has lots of things bernie wants as does most of europe, but he would still be a proper left wing politician.
weird how across europe, wanting to leave EU is a far-right thing but here in Portugal it's a far-left thing
What's the difference between right and far right? At what point does right turn into far right?
Thank God for that.
Bernie Sanders is embedded state policy, stuff like healthcare and education
Here, the governments are mostly conservative to center-left. Christian parties in coalition have ruled in Germany for years now.
This Austrian is a Green economics professor. Some people here may call this an oxymoron. He is a figurehead anyway so doesnt matter.
He holds unprecedented power, nominally, but so does the Governor-General of New Zealand, who can abolish the parliament of NZ and is appointed by the Queen of New Zealand, who happens to live in UK.
I would assume that state embedded healthcare and education would be seen as a conservative cornerstone because of the aftermath of World War II. The rebuilding of European nations in the face of the Soviet threat required a strong citizenry among the nations and supplying state provided healthcare and education to establish strong economies was key to this.
iirc wasn't the british NHS designed because of that? The UK was so fucked up afterwards from the Nazis trying to gain momentum on their land and decided that a national health service was needed to keep the citizens morale up and prevent communist sympathies from rising.
Kind of like Reagan cutting everything and increasing military spending became a conservative cornerstone on our side.

Stop being a hypocrite. Hofer said he would dismiss the government elected by the people if the government kept going in a direction that didn't fit his ideas.

We really need a word for what's between the centre-right and far-right.

the right??????
weird how across europe, wanting to leave EU is a far-right thing but here in Portugal it's a far-left thing
It's what the Communists/more extreme Socialists and Nationalists have in common. Their anti-EU stance.

honestly the problem isn't left or right, but complacency. you see it a lot with the Conservatives and Third Way types over here - they're just peachy keeping things the way they are, but falsely assume the best way to do that is to do nothing and hope everyone else understands.
the right??????
Isn't that a collective name for them both, either way, it's confusing.
Really, my automerge.
It's what the Communists/more extreme Socialists and Nationalists have in common. Their anti-EU stance.
It's hilarious because I think that if these people ever managed to take power, they wouldn't know what to do with it. The European Union has been a wonderful entity for the continent and participating nations; trying to withdraw from it and dismantle it is retarded, as we've seen with Brexit.
A lot of the extremist parties, regardless of where they are in the world, work that way: they've got fiery rhetoric and radical positions/ways that they'd like to approach things, but truthfully they haven't got the slightest idea how to wield power or how to manage a country effectively.
Isn't that a collective name for them both, either way, it's confusing.

You are right, it's confusing.
To my understanding, centre-right means closer to the center of the whole spectrum, meanwhile right is simply the center of right side of the spectrum.
What's the difference between right and far right? At what point does right turn into far right?
I don't think there is a generally accepted border between the two. Which is problematic since people have tend to have very negative assumptions on parties labeled far-right/left, even though they could be pretty tame in the grand scheme of things.
Hofer was a pretty face for a party rooted in genuine nazism and headed by a man photographed at neo-nazi rallies. Thank fuck that FPÖ lost this one.
Still almost half the country voting for a far-right candidate, that says something.
Yeah, that says that the winning party should reconsider it's stances on certain things to please that other almost half aswell
