[t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a6/NAS_Cubi_Point_and_NS_Subic_Bay.jpg[/t]
The Philippine military has revived plans to build new air and naval bases at Subic Bay, a former U.S. naval base that American forces could use to counter China's creeping presence in the disputed South China Sea, senior navy officials said. The proposed bases in the Philippines, a close U.S. ally, coincides with a resurgence of U.S. warships, planes and personnel in the region as Washington turns its attention to a newly assertive China and shifts its foreign, economic and security policy towards Asia. A 30-hectare (74-acre) area has been identified for the bases, which would station fighter jets and the Philippines' biggest warships that patrol the disputed sea, including two Hamilton-class cutter ships it acquired for free from the United States.
It's been about 21 years since the Americans left Subic Bay. But, as luck would have it, growing Chinese pressure on Philippine territorial claims have brought them back.
I hope the locals are ok with this
I wonder if they'll allow nuclear ships in or be like New Zealand "We can't have nuclear ships because abloo bloo!!!"
I wonder if they'll allow nuclear ships in or be like New Zealand "We can't have nuclear ships because abloo bloo!!!"
Why would they as a country not under threat want aircraft carriers and submarines in their waters.
I hope the locals are ok with this
They are more than welcomed. My father was ready to join the US naval forces when they were stationed there. But the recent tragedy with one of their vessels has put some people at odds. USA being stationed in my country would be a perfect launch point of any defensive action
I hope the locals are ok with this
Filipino's love Americans, even though Americans committed genocide upon them and supported a corrupt dictatorship that oppressed them.
#didntreadthearticle
china isn't going to invade a US ally, and you dont need nuclear ships for deterrent.
Philippines has a terrible air force, that's one of the reasons they want US aircraft carriers nearby.
china isn't going to invade a US ally, and you dont need nuclear ships for deterrent.
Yes which is why almost every country on this planet maintains a military despite the vast majority having a negligible risk of invasion
Filipino's love Americans, even though Americans committed genocide upon them and supported a corrupt dictatorship that oppressed them.
I honestly never knew that happened, I thought you were just being edgy, but I looked it up and damn, it did happen. The Philippines didn't play nice either though. That was before WW2 though, so maybe they like us because we saved them from Imperial Japan and gave them their independence back afterward?
Why would they as a country not under threat want aircraft carriers and submarines in their waters.
They're anti nuclear everything. The kind of shit that holds power back
I honestly never knew that happened, I thought you were just being edgy, but I looked it up and damn, it did happen. The Philippines didn't play nice either though.
I think they just love American culture in general because of all the exposure through imperialism and huge immigration.

Part of the reason they resisted so much against the Japanese. Hell, filipino units fought alongside American units until the surrender on bataan.
They're anti nuclear everything. The kind of shit that holds power back
Yeah, and it's fucking stupid. One good nuclear plant could power half the country if not more, and have the worlds most powerful navy who you happen to be good friends with chilling in your EEZ is never a bad thing.
How do you know they did? Perhaps they just saw the US as a lesser evil to Spain and Japan. The real love of the US came probably came afterwards following the victory over Japan and increase of US influence.
china isn't going to invade a US ally, and you dont need nuclear ships for deterrent.
It's not really invasion they're worried about, they just want China to stay the fuck out of their waters. China for some reason thinks it owns most of the pacific waters and they tend to piss off a lot of their Asian neighbors. Having an American fleet stationed their might keep them in their own waters just as a formality. You're not going to bully the little kid on the playground when his big brother is right behind him with a loaded shotgun.
I think they just love American culture in general because of all the exposure through imperialism and huge immigration.
Living in a filipino family, it's safe to say yes. Yes they do.
Why would they as a country not under threat want aircraft carriers and submarines in their waters.
Nuclear reactor fearmongering?
No, the phillipenes loved us before WW2. Part of the reason they resisted so much against the Japanese. Trust me the Philippines loves the Navy. Half of the damn US Navy is Filipino.
Filipino's love Americans, even though Americans committed genocide upon them and supported a corrupt dictatorship that oppressed them.
They gave the Filipinos the idea of guns. Who doesn't love guns!?
No, the phillipenes loved us before WW2. Part of the reason they resisted so much against the Japanese. Hell, filipino units fought alongside American units until the surrender on bataan.
Actually, a fair few of them resented us after we "liberated" them from the Spanish. They wanted independence and our army ended up putting them down hard because of that. The dislike had died down some by the '30s, but many people welcomed the Japanese initially, seeing them as liberators. It wasn't until the institutionalized looting, rape and murder started that they decided they wanted the Americans back. Fun fact: the Philippines were supposed to have independence by 1945. That got shunted back by the war.
