I'm not sure if this is exactly where this thread belongs (maybe Creative Corner or whatever it's called now?) but..What the hell.

Today, I went with my dad and took a trip to a place called Centralia. Centralia was an old mining town roughly in the middle of Pennsylvania. There has been a coal fire raging right under the town for the last 40 years, and because of that, Centralia is now a ghost town..Though there's not much "town" left, just rubble, roads, and three houses.
Anyway, enough of the brief history lesson. My dad took his camera (Nikon D300 w/ 200mm telephoto lens. I love the thing.) and we drove down. It was a 2 hour trip (we left at 8 AM, got there at 10..roughly), and it was cold. About..39 degrees F when we got there? Unfortunately, due to the cold and lack of faster transportation (on places we couldn't drive) we couldn't get everywhere we wanted to. But I still took a crapload of pictures, which I will now share with you, Facepunch.

This is basically the center of what used to be the town. 20 years ago, there were houses and buildings all along the road. Now, they have all been demolished by nature's forces, or of man's will.

Look up and to the, I think east, a little bit, and you'll see these..

These are all cracks and holes in the ground, where the poisonous gasses and smoke are released from the coal fire, just underneath your feet...

This I believe is either a DEP hole (used for testing temperatures) or some kind of vent pipe.

Piles of rubble, trash, debris, and parts of the torn-up road.

Another one of the DEP holes/vents I think.

If you drive down some more, you'll pass this building...

The Municipality of Centralia.

Which, interestingly enough, must still be in use.

..Um, I just thought the picture came out nice here.
Anyway, onto the abandoned part of...

Route 61.

Of course, it being an abandoned road, it's COVERED in graffiti. Most of it were penises and "I WUZ HERE 06-01-2010", but there were some very interesting things..

(Read the text under the paw print. :v:)

There were a bunch of these dirt paths all along the side of the road. I assume for easier access.

This dirt barrier basically "hides" the old part of Route 61.

I had no clue what this thing was but it looked cool so I took a picture of it.
Anyway, that's about it. I wish we could have walked down Route 61 some more, to see the giant smoking cracks in the middle of it, but oh well. Maybe when it gets warmer.
Sounds cool, I've always wanted to go there at night.
That looks like a really good place for a huge paintball fight
It's like silent hill! The early years!
Or S.T.A.L.K.E.R. minus the radiation.
That's pretty damn cool.
It reminds me of Jupiter in CoP.
Cool pictures I live like 2 hours away, I would love to check it out. did you see any other people there? Also you didn't show much of the ground cracking open and smoke coming out.

Isn't that where everymanhybrid filmed?
So the place is still burning and literally smoking with CO?
Yeah.
Cool pictures I live like 2 hours away, I would love to check it out. did you see any other people there? Also you didn't show much of the ground cracking open and smoke coming out.

We didn't want to walk that far down the road in 40 degrees.

Mhm
So CO just pours out of the ground?
:ohdear:
Well, it IS a coal fire.

Whoa, thats ominous
Interesting fact: As of 2010, Centralia has a current population of 7 people. I am also a Pennsylvania man, and have been kind of interested in going here.
Why are some of your photos so off quilter?
None of them make me go "Wow thats some nice pictures" except for rathat.
Those cars in the station look very functional. Steal one
I've been before. My dad and his friends went years ago, passing through to go off roading a few towns over, and they ended up talking to the sole resident, some old man. It must have been neat. The guy was CONVINCED that the government happened to do this on purpose to take the land, since they bought it all up.
It's surreal.
When I went, there were actual barriers blocking off Rt61. We walked by them. I remembered a McDonalds cup impaled upon the barrier though.
This is what they got the idea of Silent Hill from btw.

Mainly because I was screwing around with some of the camera's settings the whole time.
One of these days I'll go down there and get some better pictures. Eg, spend time tweaking the camera's settings and bring a tripod with me.
It's actually kind of freaky that it's still burning, I know its coal of course but still pretty odd.
I would love to see pictures of it burning...
Same.
You picked a hell of a time to go. PA is cold as fuck around there this time of year.
Also that building IS still in use, the town's population is about 5 right now, last year i believe it lost it's town status, but there are still some people living there.
[editline]20th November 2010[/editline]
Also yeah, the fire is still burning and it's projected to keep burning for about 200 years thanks to the coal mine it's burning in.
[editline]20th November 2010[/editline]
also here's the google maps view of the abandoned/defunct route 61

Yeah, I live in PA. It is awfully cold.
Haha, before and after.

"lol furries"
I literally laughed out loud.
I thought you were trying to be cool and make Central Australia into one word.
I read about this place a while back.
Nice pictures OP.

A clue! A clue!
Cool pictures. I always love seeing pictures people take of ghost towns, or pictures from urban explorations.
That looks like a really good place for a huge paintball fight
or dogging
Yeah, I live in PA. It is awfully cold.
20 in the winter, 100 in the summer. ugh.

Nostalgia ohshi- :psyboom:
I always wanted to go to Centralia, only an hour and a half drive from where I live.
