Brazil is not very happy about all these NSA revelations. As home to Latin America's biggest economy, the country understandably hates the idea that the United States is listening to its phone calls and reading its emails. In fact, Brazil hates it so much that it wants to disconnect itself from the U.S. internet altogether.
President Dilma Rousseff seems bullish about it, though, and has ordered several specific—and potentially impossible—measures to break away from the U.S. internet:

Build more internet exchange points in order to route Brazilian traffic around potential spyware.
Launch a state-run email service through the postal service to act as an alternative to Gmail, Yahoo Mail and others.
Laying a new underwater cable to Europe so that Brazil can connect with those countries directly

Good fucking luck lol.
All I have to say is, good luck. If the NSA are ballsy to bug embassies in other countries what makes you think they won't try to bug your fancy new underwater cables/servers

Fucking ninja
Poor title, read the article. They don't want to rely on the USA for internet connectivity, to keep their own data secure.

I've readed it, i just used the original article title
Launch a state-run email service through the postal service to act as an alternative to Gmail, Yahoo Mail and others.
Government run email services always turn out terrible.
Brazil and other south american countries are mostly ideologically awesome but usually have terrible policy execution.
It is a good idea but this will not work out at all.
Government run email services always turn out terrible.
It's looking good (in the concept) I heard it will use digital certification for the messages, a new technology to certificate the sender identity, as well SHA-2 256 bits encryption.
Just the name (Mensageria Digital) it's sounds awful in portuguese

Whilst subtly using it to push for control of the internet in Brazil.
Government run email services always turn out terrible.
You're pretty much asking for them to monitor your emails.
I hope this will keep the Brazilians off the American DOTA 2 servers.
You're pretty much asking for them to monitor your emails.
Brazil just wants to cut out the middleman and have the surveillance for themselves.
Finally DOTA 2 and other MMORPGS will be free!
I hope this will keep the Brazilians off the American DOTA 2 servers.

Finally DOTA 2 and other MMORPGS will be free!
Don't worry I will not stop instalocking bloodseeker
nothing can stop me and my friends
we hold club meetings on how to ruin people's games, it's quite fun
On a more serious note though, I like most of the ideas, but the state-run email service? eehhhhhh
but then how will brazilians ask their favorite artists (read, all of them) to COME TO BRAZIL
Good fucking luck lol.

Nothing is secure, not even in your own country, not even if you try to 'Great Firewall' yourself, when the NSA has unlimited power.
Force Internet companies like Google and Facebook to build servers inside Brazil's borders so that they would be subject to Brazilian privacy laws. - "Hey Google, we heard Brazil wants you to build special servers inside their own country so we can't access them. That's cute. Here's a National Security Letter that legally forces you to build remote NSA access into them."
Build more internet exchange points in order to route Brazilian traffic around potential spyware. - Compromise them from within.
Launch a state-run email service through the postal service to act as an alternative to Gmail, Yahoo Mail and others. - see above
Laying a new underwater cable to Europe so that Brazil can connect with those countries directly - Will be tapped covertly within months of going operational.
Rousseff has also demanded a detailed report of the extent of American intelligence gathering in Brazil. - "And then - and then, he said - I shit you not - 'I demand a detailed report of the extent of American intelligence gathering in Brazil' !" *raucous laughter from everyone in the room*

serious question: how the fuck are south american countries 'ideologically awesome'?
Even though it won't work, I hope it seriously does. And all other countries who have found that the US spies on them should ban American ISPs in protest.
Its all smoke and mirrors people.
They want this so that they alone have the power the censor the internet in their country. It's not about protecting freedom of speech they want to further restrict it. Right now a lot of political movements in Brazil are gaining momentum through the use of social media. This is something that I assume the powers that be want to prevent.
Allow me, as a Brazillian, to put forward my reaction to this piece of news:
AHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
Seriously, our country can't even do one thing, and instead of working on the things they should be working on, they decide that suddenly they're so important the NSA can't take their eyes off them?
Yeah, I know "bla bla bla biggest economy", but Brazil's politicians are so dumb fuck corrupt that the only thing the NSA would possibly get is a bunch of e-mails detailing how to fuck over the population some more.
Rouseff, get off your fucking chair, and try doing some shit that matters, like working on the problems that caused the biggest wave of protests in the country since that one time we impeached one of our presidents.
quick question though, doesn't Google like corun the big search engine in Brazil? also Government run email.... hmm doesn't inspire much trust in them not reading your spam
oh for fuck's sake, this is stupid. Dilma, what the hell?

to be fair, brazil is one of the most spied countries.

That's fucking stupid, and I haven't heard of that from any national media sources so I doubt it.
Our president is making such a drama over this NSA scandal, I mean, that's on the bottom of the list of important things they should be worrying about.

He's probably trying to distract you from other, more important things.
Yay no more BRs in my league of legends
Good luck, most DNS, content holding and other servers are all located in the United States, Russia and China have been pushing the UN to make a world treaty so they can get their fingers on it.
I hope this will keep the Brazilians off the American DOTA 2 servers.
Don't forget the NA CS:GO servers too (Valve even added their own matchmaking servers in Brazil too, yet some still come on NA servers)!
