I'm supposed to be looking online for a decent car to get for when I go back to college in September that has good safety ratings and will have a decently lower insurance rate but I'm not sure where to start and don't really know that much about cars (compared to what you guys probably know on this board). What would you guys suggest going for? It wouldn't be a brand spanking new car, but maybe like one or two years old or something. Essentially it needs to have decent town-driving mileage (like 25-35 mph zones are mostly what I'll be driving it in), have a decent safety rating, and at least look moderately decent.
Thanks!
Edit: This is for in the US, forgot to mention that.
Jensen Interceptor FF if you want brand new or Ford Sierra Sapphire Cosworth if you can go a bit older then 2 years.
Seriously though, I don't think you will get a car that new. Go for something atleast 5 years old and you can get something good for a few thousand quid but I would actually recommend going for a motorcycle. You should be able to get a 125cc machine at that age. 125cc bikes can do 70mph and most have brilliant MPG. Some have 120 MPG so you will be fine for fuel if you choose an appropriate bike. Have a look at the Honda CBF125 if you do decide to go for a bike, it's a very easy to ride bike and super cheap. Also the insurance is cheap too.
Whatever you choose to get, car or bike I would start looking here.

If you can find one get a VW Lupo or something similar like a Seat Arosa. Insurance group 1, 1.0 litre engine 5 star NCAP safety rating.
OP lives in the US guys
I feel a bit silly now.
buy a Volvo 850 T5
vw gti
Honda Civic would fit the bill.
Prius
Does anyone know anything about Chevy Impalas or Cruzes? Are they decently good/safe cars as far as durability is concerned?

My friend wants an impala, and they're pretty good with durability. As with all cars, YMMV.
