Source: herel
It was the video game that birthed an entire genre. One whose three-dimensional, pixelated gore both enthralled and appalled a society reared on blasting asteroids and playing virtual ping-pong. It spawned two sequels, four novels, a comic book and a fleet of gaming imitators, although the less said about the critically panned Karl Urban and The Rock-starring movie, the better. Today marks 20 years since Doom was first released and, depending on whom you’re asking, is either the most influential gaming title of all time, or a devil-worshipping "mass murder simulator" that led to real life slaughter. Although Doom wasn’t the first title to present gameplay from the perspective of the player – the earliest first person shooters go as far back as the mid ’70s – it popularised the genre to such an extent that for years, all FPS games released were dubbed "Doom clones". This means the likes of Call of Duty, with its Hollywood sized budget, cinematic gameplay and celebrity advocates, owes the Martian shoot-em-up a debt of gratitude.
I'm older than Doom? I FEEL SO OLD!
Games like Doom and Quake have aged really well over these past two decades. They're really fun to play on single player or multiplayer, even to this day. Also this is quite literally the most opportune time to show off a teaser for Doom 4 or something related to it.
Incredible that the game is 20 years old and can still be played online. Got to love source code releases.
Wow and i just played it yesterday with a friend.
happy birthday, first videogame i'd ever played
Oh my. I remember playing the Gameboy Advance port years ago as a kid. :v: I'd love to buy it on Steam, but I can't because bank problems.
I played Doom when I was all of three and a half years old. I was apparently good enough at it that I beat the first episode of it (with a few reloads) at that same tender age. The rest of the family who were into games marveled.
Doom is still a fine game these days. I never got myself to finish it though.
I am the same age as the game wow! ( my birthday is today so that's why).
To another 20 years of controversy!
Doom, Duke Nukem, and Hexxen are games i remember fondly and still enjoy to this day.

Suppose this is a perfect time to replay DOOM 1 and 2.
Happy birthday to one of the most important games in history!
that plus DOOM II on IOS
Gameception + IWAD.
Well shit. I'm older than the game by a few months. Good watch here.
Doom. My first and only love. GOTYAY. And the best part about it is that the community is still strong. SpeedRunsLive is doing a race later in the day, and Doomworld should be releasing the 2013 Cacoawards soon. Goddamn do I love this game.

I could never really get into the original doom games, but then I found brutal doom and that enhanced my experience drastically.
Happy birthday Doom! Still have fond memories playing you.
I plan on buying either Doom Classic Complete or the PS1 port to celebrate 20 Years of Doom.
http://www.twitch.tv/re1nhardt If anyone is interested i'm streaming a playthrough of this childhood game, using classing dpad+ctrl, space, shift, alt controls.
I plan on buying either Doom Classic Complete or the PS1 port to celebrate 20 Years of Doom.
Avoid the steam version of it, it's a terrible port.
I'm older than Doom? I FEEL SO OLD!
I am a little short of six years older than Doom. Geezus.
Happy birthday to one of the most important games in history!
Thats not call of duty
I am a little short of six years older than Doom. Geezus.
I envy those older than the game, I feel like I really missed out on some good years.
If you have access to the doom.wad and doom2.wad files (if you have the doom games on steam you have these files in their respective directories), go check out Zandronum. This is a new engine for Doom with dynamic lighting, extra features, 1920x1080 capability, modern sound, mouse, and keyboard support, etc... You can also play it multiplayer with the Doomseeker server browser which will automatically download any mods the server may be running. If you are going to replay Doom or you want to check out some of the amazing mods (Delta Invasion will blow your mind: you've never fought this many monsters on screen before, trust me), Zandronum is the way to do it. Link to some guides here. If you need specific help try the Zandronum help forum, they're pretty good guys. Good mods to try if you want to do something different: 1) Real Guns Advanced - basically Call of Duty guns and perks inside Doom. Great for deathmatch or co-op, makes co-op a LOT harder 2) Shotgun Invasion - players work as a team to stop waves of aliens from crushing their base. A commander plays in RTS fashion and buys upgrades/buildings for the team. Eventually games lead to players wielding crazy upgraded plasma guns and mechs vs. cyber demons and other shit. It's intense. 3) Brutal Doom - this is what Doom should have been. Seriously. Easily my favourite Doom mod ever. Weapons tear enemies apart, Berzerk packs are actually terrifying, causing marines to smash enemies to pieces and execute aliens in horrific (and awesome) ways, blood and guts everywhere... at least watch a video of this. It's amazing.
If you look for good custom singleplayer doom maps, I reccomend After the Holocaust. This is pretty much the best doom map ever made in my opinion. Made by the same guy who made Brutal Doom.
Avoid the steam version of it, it's a terrible port.
You pretty much buy the Steam version for the wad files and use your own port (Skulltag, ZDoom etc)
