French minors will soon be able to watch real sex scenes in cinemas

A report last year from France’s film classification board criticized the law, arguing that the line between real and simulated sex scenes has blurred in recent years. “A scene can be quite explicit on the screen while being simulated during the shooting,” the report reads. Filmmakers have also criticized the law on economic grounds, because an under-18 rating — equivalent to an “NC-17” rating in the US — can keep movies out of major French theater chains.

The new law, set to be announced by the beginning of February, eliminates the automatic ban in favor of a more nuanced approach. "The ban on children below the age of 18 will no longer be automatically applied to works containing scenes of non-simulated sex, but reserved for works involving scenes of sex or violence likely to seriously hurt the sensitivity of minors," the culture ministry tells BFM TV.[/QUOTE]

First off, not a fan of sex scenes in movies unless they a very necessary plot device.

That said, I have never understood why sex scenes are somewhat taboo when overt depictions of violence can fall lower into the age restriction brackets. Movies are meant to tell stories; if having limbs removed is the directors way of conveying the reality of the piece, then an uncensored sex scene should surely also qualify. Provided it isn't some niche display or sexual violence.

they're referring here to non-simulated sex, not sexual content. I think sexual content in general is very lax in France.

There's a considerable overlap between western Europe and NA culture, but to say that France, or any other neighbouring countries like Germany, Spain, or even the UK, are just more NA culture isn't really correct.

Considering western culture has more or less permeated the entire globe, you wouldn't talk of places like Russia or Japan as being western despite huge western influences. France is in that same boat.

At least as far as Germany goes, the roles of violence and sex are just about completely reversed compared to US media culture.
There's still [I]some[/I] limit on it being broadcast of course, but at least to me it seems to be way more lax than the restrictions on violence.

Yesterday I watched the Danish equivalent of "The great British bake off" and I think "fucking" was said twice in that program without being censored. I can't imagine that would've gone over well in the US.

I was thinking more in terms of actual nudity and sex.

It depends on the time of day of course, but while erections above a certain angle are outlawed on TV during the day (while just nudity of any completeness is fine all around the clock as long as it's not porn afaik), it's not unusual for porn infomercials to be on plain cable TV late at night in Germany.
It doesn't seem to bother anyone despite this country's rather heavy Christian influence, so I'm not too sure how much of an obstacle to porn religion in general really is. It probably largely depends on the specific religious tendency that's present in a certain country.
