A Christian street preacher who was held by police without food or water for 15 hours after he was arrested over comments he made to two gay teenagers has been given £13,000 in compensation. John Craven was held in Manchester after two boys claimed they were offended by his views on homosexuality. The 57-year-old said the experience in September 2011 had been "distressing". Greater Manchester Police agreed to compensate Mr Craven after he alleged a breach of his human rights. Mr Craven, who has regularly preached in Manchester city centre for seven years, was approached by the boys while he was preaching about salvation. He said the teenagers asked him what he thought of gays, which he had answered by quoting from the Bible's teachings on the subject, before adding that "whilst God hates sin, He loves the sinner". He said the pair then began to kiss in front of him and act out sexual acts. The boys then reported Mr Craven to a nearby mounted police constable, who placed him under arrest for "public order offences".
http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-manchester-26816850
Disgusting through and through. This isn't even a case where you have to comment "but what the preacher did wasn't right" because it simply wasn't all that out of line.
I'm no expert, but I'd say those two kids qualify as dickheads.
Fuck those kids, they should be put in holding.
gotta love how the police just went along with it
God this whole article sounds fake. Fuck homophobic people and all that, but thank god this doesn't happen to them in America.
He was fucking asked for his feelings! How is that illegal to give them when asked? He even sounded like he was pretty nice about it, wrong as he might be.
So he was preaching, they started kissing in front of him, they reported him to the police, and he was held without food or water? Either I'm missing something, or everyone involved it a moron.

They asked a religious person for his views on homosexuality, got offended and reported him to the police? Fuck those assholes.

They provoked them in this video, though. Still not a good idea to attack someone for that reason.
apparently, gay people can persecute too now
Those kids are assholes.

We have to shield ourselves from any unkind or impure thoughts at all times under pain of prosecution.
Not even that homophobic. He noted "God hates sin, but loves the sinner." He said he didn't approve in general, but would still accept the people for who they are; taking a very civil approach to it.

He somehow still love you though!
Don't worry, God only hates your nature. He somehow still love you though!
the concept isn't that ridiculous
the concept isn't that ridiculous
I made you... and I love you... but I also hate you.
Don't worry, God only hates your nature. He somehow still love you though!
I don't agree with the preachers who say it, but it isn't too far out there. Most parents still love their kids even if they do stuff they don't want them to.
That hates the sin, loves the sinner applies to everyone though. There's no real reason to come down on gays harshly. You ever lied in your life or coveted someone else's thing? You're a sinner unworthy of heaven. Part of the point of the bible is that people are awful at not sinning. Jesus even talks about people complaining about other people's sins being hypocrites. That being said, this pastor didn't really wander around condemning people from the sounds of it. He was asked a question and answered it. There really wasn't any good reason to get this bent out of shape about it.
Not comparable at all. This would be like hating your kid because he has blond hair.
It'd be like hating your kid's blonde hair, but not the kid himself.
It'd be like hating your kid's blonde hair, but not the kid himself.
Except you tell your kid he has to keep a cap on his head and hide his hair and be ashamed of it and never be able to grow it long the way he likes.

I'm not saying it is right, but it isn't illogical or anything.
They get beaten up instead. They provoked them in this video, though. Still not a good idea to attack someone for that reason.
That's a little different though, that's other people getting into a fight over bullshit. What happened in the OP's article involved an institutionalized oppression of controversial beliefs (lol big words, I sound like a fuck) by the police. Getting your ass kicked by a guy you picked a fight with isn't that close to getting your ass kicked by the state.
Hating a characteristic is not the same thing as hating a person.
Funny how the thread devolved into questioning whether or not the victim did something to, even indirectly, deserve it.
Hating a characteristic is not the same thing as hating a person.
Lol somebody's sexuality is hardly a "characteristic."
Lol somebody's sexuality is hardly a "characteristic."
What would you call it then? A trait? A characteristic is just something defining and unique about a person or thing.
Hating a characteristic is not the same thing as hating a person.
Oh boy please don't continue with this really silly argument.
