The theories of evolution and the Big Bang are real and God is not "a magician with a magic wand", Pope Francis has declared. Speaking at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, the Pope made comments which experts said put an end to the "pseudo theories" of creationism and intelligent design that some argue were encouraged by his predecessor, Benedict XVI.

Giovanni Bignami, a professor and president of Italy's National Institute for Astrophysics, told the Italian news agency Adnkronos: "The pope's statement is significant. We are the direct descendents from the Big Bang that created the universe. Evolution came from creation." Giulio Giorello, professor of the philosophy of science at Milan's University degli Studi, told reporters that he believed Francis was "trying to reduce the emotion of dispute or presumed disputes" with science.
Francis confirmed for coolest Pope. It's so refreshing to hear a powerful Christian saying stuff like this.
Atheism 1 Catholicism 1 Everything else 0
So a scientific branch and an "old" branch of christianity will appear?
Just be wary in case the Vatican "clarifies" the comments "for" him at some point in the future. In the meantime, does this mean that the former stance of the Catholic Church (that you can believe what you want about evolution and creation) is no longer the case and that the Church fully supports a theory of creationism that has its basis purely in Science? Other than the fact that God obviously had to wave a magic wand to make the big bang... [editline]28th October 2014[/editline]
So a scientific branch and an "old" branch of christianity will appear?
They've already existed for a long time.
this shouldn't even be a debate or a question
Hasn't the vatican been saying this for years? Nothing new really.
Pope Francis is cool.
I don't see why the Big Bang theory would even be in contrast to anything said in the bible. They line up pretty much perfectly, in the beginning there was nothing, then there was an unorganized mess that got organized.
Hasn't the vatican been saying this for years? Nothing new really.
Some in the Vatican and a lot of others, yes, but I'm not sure if it's actually popped out of a popes mouth before though.
Just be wary in case the Vatican "clarifies" the comments "for" him at some point in the future.
Not necessarily. The pope believes in conscious evolution. God's still a major part of the picture.

I seriously don't understand why the pope endorses it like this.
Science is God's tool in shaping the world. Also there's a verse that says a day to God can be a thousand years to us, so the days in Genesis are not literal days. At least this is the interpretation I go by. Also the Bible says nothing on how the world was actually created, so I'd just go with the most logical answer.
It's just an ungodly boring TV series. I seriously don't understand why the pope endorses it like this.
That's a bad joke even by my standards.
Hopefully this helps against that stupid idea that religious people are anti-science.
Hopefully this helps against that stupid idea that religious people are anti-science.
Not an unfounded bias unfortunately.
Hopefully this helps against that stupid idea that religious people are anti-science.
There's plenty of denominations of Christianity that disregard the theory of evolution. This is one of them that doesn't
Hasn't the vatican been saying this for years? Nothing new really.
I think the previous stance was simply that there was nothing to confirm or deny the big bang theory, and so the church was open to it as a theory.
The bible's creation explanation makes me think of ancient people trying to interpret a scientific explanation of creation, as if someone told them about it and they didn't fully understand. Same for a lot of ancient creation myths. It's really interesting to think of it all in that light.
This has been Vatican dogma for decades.
So, are they going to print the Bible without the first few pages now or what ?
Hopefully this helps against that stupid idea that religious people are anti-science.
Protestants don't recognize the pope's authority and creationists are for the great majority protestant, so that won't really help.
Holy shit this Pope keeps getting better and better
So, are they going to print the Bible without the first few pages now or what ?
silly thing to say the implication is that the bible is metaphor and that any scientific findings can fit into its story [editline]28th October 2014[/editline] i think it's funny that stuff like this makes the vatican a more progressive force than, say, a large number of american schools
What makes more sense, pouring a couple trillions of extremely complicated mathematical equations and other such information over a bunch of nomads, or using easy to understand metaphors? Also;
Atheism 1 Catholicism 1 Everything else 0
Not really, creative design is something that the protestant community has been accepting for a while now. Granted not all denominations or people do, but a large portion of people accept it.
Does this guy do anything bad? Seems like the coolest pope ever
The Catholic Church has actually been pretty good with science, at least in the last century or so. I mean, it was a Catholic priest, Georges Lemaitre, who in the first place proposed the original concept of the Big Bang.
The bible is just a story book like anything else, meant to preach certain values think of it as anything that really happened and....
Good guy pope.
