Oxford University has decided to ban the music streaming application Spotify because it uses P2P technology.
:wtc:
Spotify can be pretty annoying, it rapes our bandwidth at school.
I don't like the sound of this.
Their reasoning seems a bit spotty.
p2p is definately bad becuase it is used in bad stuff like limewire and some people host bad content so that makes it bad and ilegal just like how bitorent is illgal

roads are definately bad becuase it is used in bad stuff like speeding and drunk driving
I know you're being sarcastic, just helping.
Suprised this made the 'news'.
It is a bandwidth hog, and Oxford don't want to spend the money increasing the bandwidth for "non educational purposes" when soon they'll be getting data from CERN which will come in the bucketload.
I never used spotify anyway so I'm not upset by it.
P2P only fails at QoS, nothing else.
If the network admins had known what they were doing, it wouldn't take up any bandwidth.

Edinburgh uni blocks communication (mostly) between clients on most of their networks, thus no local p2p which prevents any bandwidth problems due to spotify or any other p2p software.
What the hell, they better not try to pull this shit on us at portsmouth. If they do I will pretty much destroy any argument they have against it.
Better than my Uni. They banned pretty much everything that could possibly be inappropriate, even some things that they just don't like.
It's not really censorship as you are under their rules for Internet usage anyway so they can do whatever they want.

Dude, this is Oxford, much smarter than that logic.
QoS, the IT manager missed it in the Cisco training course.
Actually, fuck it, he probably didn't even do the damn thing.

CERN's data is transferred over the grid, nothing to do with the internet.

Being smart is something else then logic.

I know, 95% of the people who use bittorrent never ever download anything illegal with it, just the few bad apples stand out in all the stats.
Besides spotify uses a lot of bandwidth.

Cisco training course contains nothing relevant to actual networking, it just gets you familiarized with Cisco's needlessly complicated equipment

Did you really think they would say that "We're shit, get Linux on cloneware and don't pay us anything"
<-- Lives in Oxford.
Ok Oxford University is huge.
fucking HUUUUUUUGE.
It owns so much property and land it's insane. They supply a large amount of it with wireless. Can you imagine the cost of supporting something like spotify?
I think it's less a case of "oh noez they might be downloadin' those movies hurf durf" and more a case of "There is no theoretical limit to how much strain this could levy on our network, lets just kill it before people get too used to it"
Spotify can be pretty annoying, it rapes our bandwidth at school.
Agreed, when about four or five kids start using it at school our internet keeps getting disconnected and stuff.

Depends on the course, they provide actually quite a lot of them.
But seriously, just give P2P traffic the lowest priority and be done with it.
Grooveshark is banned at my school for the same reason :wtc:

Do you go to the Uni or just live there, out of interest.
Stuff Oxford then, not that i had much chance of getting in anyway. Also, why is this news?
My university at Preston supports the use of Spotify but blocks steam and all online games fucking sucks since im doing GAMES DESIGN and its a form of research for us and they blocked xbox live and psn so it cant do any beta's or shit!
You're on the Uni's webserver :. they can ban pretty much whatever they want. For example, they may choose to ban all websites with the letter "l" in them. It'd fuck over the students, but what can you do?
not much really except complain i guess which we have and protested aswell, but the fact is im paying to use it for the year so its kind of unfair imo

If a few people using Spotify hogs the network, they're going to face a huge fucking problem when CERN data starts flowing in.
I dident know about this application until I broswed this thread. Anyways Oxford is stupid. P2P is the new http.
makes me laugh how the government is on about letting universities charge what they will but alot of universities aren't prepared to put out what you pay for when it comes to having the resources to support the students of today.
