CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — A Tennessee man's body is being exhumed to remove dentures that belong to another man after a mix-up at a Chattanooga hospital.
Parkridge Medical Center spokeswoman Alison Counts told The Chattanooga Times Free Press that the body of 76-year-old Kenneth Ray Manis will be exhumed after his family learned the dentures belonged to an intensive care patient who shared the same hospital room.
Court records obtained by the newspaper showed Manis died on June 12. The dentures were with personal items placed inside his coffin. Counts said Manis' family asked that the dentures be removed.
The hospital has apologized and will be paying for new dentures, as well as reburial costs and attorney's fees. The hospital declined to identify the patient who lost his dentures.
:colbert:
He wants his pearly whites. Well, not so pearly or white, but still. Kinda
Anyways, that's pretty weird, Why would that even really matter?
I'd crack up laughing if it turns out the recently deceased guy had his teeth replaced with porcelain ones.
If they're trying to identify who owns the dentures how did they know they were the wrong ones from 6 feet under?
why the fuck would they even care
I'd understand being annoyed if someone was mistakenly buried with my teeth in their coffin, but these aren't even the guy's original teeth, they're just dentures. Seriously though, I'd be pissed if I found out that someone had taken my teeth with them to the grave.
Okay am I the only one that thinks we should have some respect for dead bodies?
I don't like the idea of exhumations at all. For fucking dentures no less.
It's things like this that make me very uncomfortable about autopsies, etc. as necessary as they may be.

Frankly I don't understand why humanity is so obsessed with preserving and subsequently sanctifying corpses
I'd rather my corpse be disposed of in a way that expedites decomposition

good lord this post has lots of big nerdy words

Well I don't know, it's just imagine your mother dies, and they want to give her an autopsy for whatever reason. And you know that in an autopsy they'll do things such as cut open the skull, peel the face off and fold it over itself, remove the brain, etc.
Wouldn't that make you the least bit uncomfortable?
I know it doesn't really make logical sense but...
Also I got my description of an autopsy from a Richard Preston thriller novel so don't be too mean about that
About decomposition, I agree. I feel like I'd just be more comfortable getting myself or a loved one cremated. No worm food.

I can't say that it would, no
maybe I have a bright (?) future as a mortician, I don't know.
Oh fine, be that way. No point in arguing.
Well I just want to know why you (and so many others) feel this way
It's definitely the majority viewpoint I just don't understand it

Apparently it was the family of the exhumed man who wished him exhumed, which seems incredibly stupid

I don't really know. It's so ingrained in every culture to have respect for the dead isn't it? It may just go back to religious beliefs, like if you don't properly bury the body his restless spirit will haunt the Earth forever oooohhh
If my mom died I'd not just see her dead body as some now-useless object, to be disposed of as soon as possible.
Which is what it really is I guess.
Edit
Would you go to a funeral for reasons other than "She's my mom, don't wanna look like an ass by not showing"?

I don't know, the way I see it is a person's body is second in importance to their mind when it comes to my relationship with them. That is, their personality and mannerisms and the like are what the true person is made of.
And after they die, that's gone immediately. The dead body is just an abandoned vehicle per se.
it's how we roll as a species and I wont begrudge others their farewell to the dead.
Have I attempted to deprive anyone of that?

cremation for me
cremation for me
Cremation? How incredibly dull, same for burial, toss me into a lake or a riverbed so I can fossilize.
