Congressmen Joe Baca (D-Calif.) and Frank Wolf (R-Va.) on Monday introduced a bill that would require most video games to bear a warning label that says, "WARNING: Exposure to violent video games has been linked to aggressive behavior."
I guess the rest of our nations problems have been solved.
The Bill would require every game, except ones rated EC (Early Childhood), to carry the warning text. That means any game that is rated "E" for everyone, "E10+" for everyone 10 and older, "T" for teen, "M" for mature or "A" for adult. Even if the game isn't violent.
"Just as we warn smokers of the health consequences of tobacco, we should warn parents — and children — about the growing scientific evidence demonstrating a relationship between violent video games and violent behavior," Wolf said. "As a parent and grandparent, I think it is important people know everything they can about the extremely violent nature of some of these games."
I'm not going to waste my time pointing out how a link between violent games and real violence has never been established in any meaningful way, nor will I belabor the point that the people proposing this law are paid for with taxpayer money, nor will I point out that mandatory labeling of art work is almost certainly unconstitutional. Instead, I'll look on the bright side, and say, hey, at least it's a bipartisan bill, which proves that the Democrats and Republicans can work together as long as they're doing something dumb.
Idiots -__-
Um don't the current ratings do this anyway. So much energy wasted on bullshit
Except it doesn't. The studies they have where it says that video games are linked to aggression use bullshit methods to get results.
If I was playing something awesome and it was taken away suddenly, I would feel kind of frustrated.

WARNING. THIS GAME MAY CAUSE VIOLENT BEHAVIOR IN CHILDREN
I would like to see that scientific evidence. Correlation does not equal causation (Oh god did i say that right?)
about the growing scientific evidence demonstrating a relationship between violent video games and violent behavior,"
What growing scientific evidence?
And the ratings are kind of straightforward on their own. Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Drug References, Strong language and Partial Nudity kind of speaks for itself.
Oh waw!
Might as well do it to alcohol as well! YOU KNOW HOW GREAT IT IS. Oh wait, THEY WONT.
Should rename the warnings to, "WARNING: Can cause freedom of expression and thought, counterproductive to our agendas!"
Just so you guys know how intelligent this guy is, he also was a SOPA co-sponsor and likes to belittle woman.

This is also his third time trying to push this bill.
this is getting thrown out sooooo fast
Uh, just read the bill's text
It says warning labels must be placed on games specifically with the following ratings: then it lists all the ratings including E for Everyone
This bill will never come out of committee anyway so not much to worry about, but this is some seriously retarded shit
A Democrat and Republican working together to fight video games
Isn't it beautiful?
I find video games relieve stress when I am angry and pissed off, like CoD is good for when I'm trigger happy, Counter Strike if I need some fun, TF2 if I want an alternative and story telling games (Metro 2033 etc.) when I just need something to do.
Video games don't make people angry, they make you feel good.. At least that is in my experience.
Besides the ratings do speak for themselves, it's not like these are cigarettes where we need to tell people the dangers, you won't get cancer from video games, you won't get shit from video games...
For fuck sake people are dumb
Everyone knows they never read those damn labels even on cigarettes.
Funny thing is that my senior English class made us do a research project, and I decided to research whether video games do incite violence. Most research and stuff I could find ultimately showed that it stimulated your brain (seriously, those who play action-paced games tend to have a spike in reaction processes), but it didn't incite one to violence unless they were generally already a troubled individual with a tenuous grasp on reality.
Hell, I even found one article that basically berated a man not for the topic he did ('how video games cause violence') but for the fact that studies countered his blatantly-biased and research-less claims. We all know this already, but it's just ridiculous how much of a scapegoat games are for politicians and older individuals.

There is a growing body of evidence that violent media is linked to violent behavior.
I'd like to see these "scientific studies" stand up to real peer review please
I think I officially hate our government.

Except that they do not cause violent behavior, having an influence on an individual and forcing them to behave violently are completely different things.
These types of warnings are stupid because if someone were to play a game and it inspired them to act violently towards another individual, it's not the game's fault, that individual was obviously disturbed to begin with. The fact that "violent" video games have been around for decades now, and that despite their massive increase in popularity there's been no obvious effect on violent crime is apparent. Of the hundreds of thousands of people who have played violent video games, how many actually committed a violent crime, and of those, how many did it directly because a game influenced them to do so?
since they payed scientists to say it's true
Video games causes aggressive behaviour when the computer is better than the player.
Frustration maybe but not aggressive behavior
lmao violent video games make you as violent as watching an episode of Loony Toons
Unless they plan on putting these labels on TV shows, movies, and other forms of media, fuck off
since when
Since always, ever since I played Halo I have felt the need to kill small animals.
Since always, ever since I played Halo I have felt the need to kill small animals.
And people. Everyone knows that playing violent video games turns you into a psychopath, always thinking about and planning to kill those around you.

Those are like 10 years old. And from the first link:
That is the conclusion of a 15-year longitudinal study of 329 youth published in the March
329 people? You can hardly get any accurate results with that small number.
If they're talking about competitive video games leading to aggressive behavior then it is believable. Its the same thing that happens with sports, the drive to win encourages players to act more aggressively, but not necessarily more violently.

Um most studies are done with a sample size like that. It's impossible for a team to track thousands of people. That's why I posted multiple studies that seem to point to the same conclusion. A causal link between violent media and aggressive behavior.
[editline]20th March 2012[/editline]
And studies that link cigarette smoking to cancer are like 50 years old. Does that mean we need to disregard them?
