• Rumored Steam client and Source port for Linux
For those that have doubted the exclusive Phoronix claims for quite a while now that the Steam client and Source Engine are in fact being ported to Linux, the doubts can be nearly laid to rest. Even I began to wonder how long it would take before the clients for their popular games would be publicly released under Linux. However, after confirming the information perhaps a bit too soon, their level of Linux interest is much more clear after spending a day at their offices. A meeting topped off the day with Gabe Newell regarding Linux where he sounded more like a Linux saint than an ex-Microsoft employee. Valve does have some great plans for Linux beyond just shipping the client versions of Steam and their popular games on the Source Engine. As I have been sharing for a few weeks, Valve invited me out to their Bellevue, Washington offices after Gabe Newell asked me last month for some referrals of developers with Linux OpenGL experience. They already have a team of Linux developers working on the client efforts, but they are looking to expand. From the recommendations I made to Gabe last month for some experienced Linux OpenGL programmers, they already hired one of them for their Linux skills and are still interviewing at least one other from my list. Valve is also hiring more, and it's just not Linux OpenGL -- even if you're just a Linux kernel developer they might be interested in hiring you (I'll be placing some more recommendations to them in the next few days, if you think you might be interested, contact me for possible referral especially if your work has been covered on Phoronix in the past).
Read more in the Source [t]http://ic.tweakimg.net/ext/i/imagelarge/1335358071.jpeg[/t][t]http://ic.tweakimg.net/ext/i/imagelarge/1335358069.jpeg[/t][t]http://ic.tweakimg.net/ext/i/imagelarge/1335358066.jpeg[/t]
Yes please
Bye bye windows, I don't need you anymore!
cool another reason for me to use linux again
It's not really rumored - the guy was at Valve and directly talked about it with grand Gabe himself, and got photos. What more do you want?
There is a god, and his name is Gabe Newell.
This made me laugh tho
Listening to Gabe Newell talk about Linux for hours made me wonder whether he was a former ex-Microsoft employee (where he actually did work in his pre-Valve days in the 90's) or the director of the Linux Foundation. His level of Linux interest and commitment was incredible while his negativity for Windows 8 and the future of Microsoft was stunning.
[editline]25th April 2012[/editline] Why do Windows 8 suck? Gabe said so
.
I'll still use Windows regardless because it works and has all my applications etc on it. But could be handy with my netbook, just to talk to friends online. Also why is Gabe saying negative things about Windows 8 :v:, doesn't that seem silly considering that steam started on Windows and pretty much it's entire userbase is on Windows. It gets you into a bad position to start being so outspoken about things, take an example like the PS3 where he said negative things and then later had to talk about it being the best console platform. It pays to not get ahead of yourself here. Windows 8 isn't even out yet.

They are absolutely deluded if they think people actually want touchscreen laptops and desktops. Why not sit down and wave your hands round at the display next, that's so incredibly comfortable and intuitive.
And I think that Gabe's opinion on Sony changed once he realized Microsoft with xbox is even less friendly towards their requests.

It's just generally dumbed down too much. But this is probably a repeat of the usual windows release cycle, every second release is quite shit, then the one after it is great, since it fixes the issues with the last one.
By the way, L4D2 will be first
I am still struck by just how interested Valve is in Linux as a platform; it is certainly beyond my original expectations. This Linux work just is not some half-assed attempt by them to make it look like they are a Linux-friendly organization. Gabe's vision to support, embrace, and promote Linux are amazing, assuming they execute, which looks to be very high probability at this point. Right now the game they have been working on the most for their Linux client is Left 4 Dead 2. Why L4D2? Basically because it is a stable code-base to do for their initial porting. They have plans to bring their other titles to Linux as well as lobby other game developers using Steam and the Source Engine to bring their games to Linux -- natively. They are not using the Wine library or anything in terms of their native Linux Steam/Source engine work.

Maybe because he is one of few people who say what they think and don't say everything purely with intention to give particular impression?
No yeah that's great and all, every industry needs people to be outspoken about shit like this. But sometimes in SOME cases it doesn't help anyone to be outspoken. Was just the point I was making! Also I quite like the Windows 8 stuff, but that's just me and different people like different stuff I get it. They should make two versions of it, where one is mouse friendly with perhaps a more start bar esque thing and then other a touchscreen based one. It's bad to just have one method of doing it. Also talking of Linux I don't suppose anyone could recommend a good Netbook-friendly release to me?
Also, if you have read that Handbook involving stuff about Valve hierarchy
In part, what has taken so long is that Valve's management structure is rather flat. Anyone there is free to work on with what they wish without needing to report directly to managers assigning them with tasks, etc. There has been developers working on the Linux support for sometime, but not until recently has Gabe Newell become personally involved with the Linux client work. In fact, his desk is currently in the current Valve Linux development camp!
You know shit goes serious when big G himself gets involved.
Yes, please. Using WINE to run Steam makes it laggy as fuck. I'm just gonna hope it works and can be installed by simply depackaging and running a Steam executable, like Desura does.
And now the Linux using master race comes out. Good for you guys though.
Fucking took them long enough.
I expected another pie-in-the-sky speculation about a linux client. What I got was "Gabe is on it". So happy.

There is a genuine market for those kinds of systems. It isn't as big as the tablet market (y'know, the thing Windows 8 is being built to support better than any Windows OS yet?), but there are people who use touch screen monitors on desktop and laptop computers. You seem to have confused the focus on making Windows 8 touch screen accessible for tablet use with them targeting people who use touch screen displays on other systems. Making that a god-awful argument. Plus you included a slippery-slope argument in there making your point even less valid. Other than the Metro Start Screen being a slight pain in the ass to use on a desktop, almost every other aspect of Windows 8 functions exactly the same as Windows 7, plus some bits that have been improved. And that one problematic aspect of Windows 8 has been fixed by third party tools if it aggravates you that much. Because despite how much you disagree, Metro does work on a normal computer, it just isn't perfect. [editline]25th April 2012[/editline]
Yes, please. Annoying, but with this news I could probably migrate my entire laptop to Linux and be fine.
Please oh please, my Arch installation is ready!
This made me laugh tho [editline]25th April 2012[/editline] Why do Windows 8 suck?
I expected another pie-in-the-sky speculation about a linux client. What I got was "Gabe is on it". So happy.
Gabe's on every project happening at Valve, if he lies down he's on a few of EA's too.
Gaben, I love you even more now.

As for the tablet market, go for it microsoft, just dont mix that shit into the desktop, Which they are doing now. All of that spiel about windows having two UI's is wrong. It has one, its the same across all platforms, unlike android 4 for example which adapts on demand. Screen dpi below 120? Ok! I'll be a tablet now, and serve tablet content! Where as win8 us a mix of both at all times. EDIT: fixed horrible formatting due to phonepost.
This paves the road closer to being on andriod phones.
This paves the road closer to being on andriod phones.
Steam is already on Android, you ponce.
