Google has taken the covers off the Nexus 5, its latest smartphone and the successor to the popular Nexus 4. Without too much fanfare the handset was outed mere hours before it goes on sale on 1 November in the UK at Carphone Warehouse and O2.
The handset features a 5-inch 1920 × 1080 display (445 ppi), 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, 8-megapixel rear-facing OIS camera, and 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor. It can come with either 16GB or 32GB of storage, 2GB of RAM, Wi-Fi (2.4G/5G) 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, NFC (Android Beam), and Bluetooth 4.0.
Kitkat looks pretty, its managed to pull off that 'light and airy' feel apple was going for, except its not sickening
Android 4.4 is designed to run fast, smooth, and responsively on a much broader range of devices than ever before — including on millions of entry-level devices around the world that have as little as 512MB RAM.

Anyone who has 512 mb RAM in their smartphones, please report if this statement is correct.
looks like my new phone
I swear Androids UI keeps getting nicer each release.
Sooo are there any rumors that they will release a new Nexus 10?
Is there a story behind why they name it around candies?
That looks lovely. It's a shame that I couldn't update my Droid 4 to the new OS.
That's the one major complaint I have with android phones. It kind of sucks having to use the same old OS for 2 years until my contract is up for a new one.
Android 4.4, KitKat, which comes on Nexus 5, will also soon be available on Nexus 4, 7, 10, the Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One Google Play edition devices in the coming weeks.
Looks like Galaxy Nexus won't be getting 4.4, signalling the end of its update cycle after two years
Goodnight sweet prince :'(
I wonder how much Nestlé (Kitkat's manufacturer) paid for that as marketing
( I don't really think they paid for it... im just saying )
I wonder how much Nestlé (Kitkat's manufacturer) paid for that as marketing
They didn't pay, both companies just thought it was a good idea
There's no exchange of money involved, but there is a significant promotional element: 50 million KitKat bars in 19 countries will have prominent Android branding and offer buyers the chance to win a Nexus 7 tablet and Google Play gift cards.
I dont really like the camera specs. We've been at 8mp for a very long time now. Id say at least a 10 should be standard.
And still no SD slot. Damnit.
Why would you need an SD card?

Not if you flash a custom rom or have a nexus phone

Megapixels are overrated.
It's better to improve the sensor itself while retaining the megapixel count, rather than stuff even more pixels into a tiny sensor which is already in desperate need of improvement (talking about the Nexus 4 sensor).
-snip I didn't know google named android releases after candy, sorry I guess-

I don't.
Instead of uping numbers like idiots we should get better sensors with less noise.
Why would you need an SD card?
Honestly an SD Card slot is a deal breaker for me as well.
Some people like to have them. Large SD cards are great for backups if you even have to do a full wipe on your phone, your backup will be safe on the card.

Or we can get both.
KitKat?

Yeah, Google name Android releases after confectionary in an alphabetical order (last one was Jellybean and before that Ice Cream Sandwich and so on).
Also ordered.
Or we can get both.
tbh we should just attach a professional DSLR to every camera so that everybody is happy.
Also I have an i9000 with 4.3 on it and it's pretty slow, opening the appdrawe takes about 15 secs sometimes, I know it's the ROM but hopefully this will fix my problems.
Or we can get both.
No you can't. Denser sensors mean more noise. There's no way around that.
current gen smartphones now have more processing power than my 3 or 4 year old macbook pro
thanks apple

I think SD cards are useful, yes, but not a necessity in a phone with that much storage. With my SEMC Xperia Arc S, the SD card is necessary, but with my Nexus 7 2012 (or any other nexus device) I wouldn't see the SD card as being necessary.
Your phone shouldn't be in a state where you need to wipe all the data and reset it (surely you can plug it into the computer and get your data that way?) unless you've done something really stupid.
Oh my god, that UI is boner inducing.

A lot of ROMs require a full wipe when coming from another ROM and it is basically always required when upgrading to a new version of android unless it is an official OTA update.

I like removable memory. I have a 32gb card that I move from my cars radio, to my computer, to my phone. Carries all my music, videos, and some extra utilities and stuff. The ease of portability is too useful for me to give up.
