The 33-27 vote by the House Thursday evening sends the legislation to Republican Gov. Jan Brewer and puts Arizona back at the forefront of a polarizing piece of legislation four years after the state enacted an immigration crackdown that caused a national furor. Similar religious protection legislation has been introduced in Ohio, Mississippi, Idaho, South Dakota, Tennessee and Oklahoma, but Arizona's plan is the only one that has passed. The efforts are stalled in Idaho, Ohio and Kansas. Republicans stressed that the bill is about protecting religious freedom and not discrimination. They frequently cited the case of a New Mexico photographer who was sued after refusing to take wedding pictures of a gay couple and said Arizona needs a law to protect people in the state from heavy-handed actions by courts and law enforcement. The bill allows any business, church or person to cite the law as a defense in any action brought by the government or individual claiming discrimination. It also allows the business or person to seek an injunction once they show their actions are based on a sincere religious belief and the claim places a burden on the exercise of their religion.
ABC 15
I'm really sad I can't just be gay in front of people without the risk of being kicked out of places.
Nobody's got the right to be an asshole to somebody else just because of their sexual orientation.
I hate living in this state
What ever happened to hate the sin, but love the sinner? How can you physically serve sin a drink?
This is just ridiculous.
What ever happened to hate the sin, but love the sinner? How can you physically serve sin a drink?
Well, in case the Devil decides to come a-calling to your place, and orders a Bloody Mary, I suppose that might count. You never know.
I just don't understand how this passed without citizens voting on it?
''our beliefs are more important then your quality of life''
snip, bad reading
"you have the right to have your rights taken away."
Don't think I support this bill but, I don't think many business owners will discriminate against gays. If they do then they are just hurting their own business. I know I wouldn't shop at places that discriminate. I think this is being passed just to make the small amount of nut jobs happy and I doubt it will affect many people except make the discriminators look like bigger assholes.

Doesn't the Civil Rights Act protect against stuff like this though? And federal law usually takes priority over state law, right?
is it really that big of a deal? It's saying that if you own a business you have the right to deny who you choose? Why not, it's their place. Do you really want to eat or be serviced by some prejudiced asshole? At least this way you'll know who all the dicks are. but then again, being able to refuse medical treatment because someone is gay, that's some bullshit. Don't really care as much though if it's like some chicken or something.
Don't think I support this bill but, I dont think many business owners will discriminate against gays. If they do then they are just hurting their own business. I wouldn't want to shop at places that discriminate anyways. We can't let them legalize discrimination just because it'll only affect a few people. These laws shouldn't even exist.

I live in AZ, and the moment I walk into a restaurant with one of my gay friends and get denied service is the day I prepare to leave this state. It may only happen once, but once is enough.
Anything religious goes in Mormon land, no matter what happens as a rule. Just look at that lady who bought up a store's entire stock of T-Shirts she deemed offensive just to protect her son from them. I might add the kid was 18.
This isn't Mormon land? And it hasn't been voted on by a single citizen, just in the house. I've seen people in Arizona protesting this bill at the capital, I don't think it represents what the people actually want. I mean I'm not too familiar with legal proceedings I'm just baffled that it has made it this far and when Arizona citizens will be able to fight it other than by protesting
lmao this is in direct violation of the civil rights act of 1964.
Unless he's acting flamboyantly gay I don't see how that would happen.
It shouldn't fucking MATTER how he's acting, that's the problem! If one of my gay friends wants to kiss another man while he's in a restaurant, fuckin' let him! It doesn't even have to be flamboyant, man. Walk in holding hands with another man and just wait. Walk in on valentines day, even. Hell people have thought I was gay simply because I have nice hair and wear tight pants. Just because not all restaurants will use the right, doesn't mean that right doesn't exist. You, as a restaurant owner, have the right to kick out a customer, because he loves another man. fuck that.
That's a terrible mindset. We can't let them legalize discrimination just because it'll only affect a few people. These laws shouldn't even exist.
Well if the few people that it is affecting are the assholes that want this bill then why does it matter? Why would anyone want to support businesses that discriminate? Do you really think LGBT people and LGBT supporters would shop at a business that was openly anti-gay? I think this will only negatively impact the discriminators. At least they aren't allowing public workers to discriminate, that's just grossly wrong. I'm from Kansas, we just passed a similar bill but worse and I am from a majoritively conservative and religious town and I see no businesses refusing service nor do I ever see it happening here. I am a business owner myself. Let them make fools of themselves
oh god every time you try to prevent discrimination you're actually enforcing discrimination on some other group! this is a terrifyingly nightmarish concept. imagine if trying to quench your thirst just made you thirstier. when you try to do good you're actually doing just as much bad. i guess we should stop trying to prevent discrimination, guys, there's no possible way for everyone to be happy. sorry gay people.

Nice to see that the winner rating isn't far behind the dumb rating. Maybe Facepunch is starting to wise up and realize that this so called "progressive" society is actually oppressing people who hold "traditional" values.
How long until someone says that their religion states they can't serve people who refuse to serve others?

Poor thing seems to get more and more abuse in these threads.
I'm really sad I can't just be gay in front of people without the risk of being kicked out of places.
man why restrict this sort of thing just to gay people public displays of affection would be banned in my establishment if i had one or any idea what said establishment would be. by smoochin' you're discriminating on all the people who can't find anyone.
