Researchers have determined that genetics could matter when it comes to some adults' political leanings.
According to scientists at UC San Diego and Harvard University, "ideology is affected not just by social factors, but also by a dopamine receptor gene called DRD4." That and how many friends you had during high school.
The study was led by UCSD's James Fowler and focused on 2,000 subjects from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. Scientists matched the subjects' genetic information with "maps" of their social networks. According to researchers, they determined that people "with a specific variant of the DRD4 gene were more likely to be liberal as adults." However, the, subjects were only more likely to have leanings to the left if they were also socially active during adolescence.
"It is the crucial interaction of two factors -- the genetic predisposition and the environmental condition of having many friends in adolescence -- that is associated with being more liberal,” according to the study.
"These findings suggest that political affiliation is not based solely on the kind of social environment people experience,” said Fowler, who is a professor of political science and medical genetics.
The researchers also said their findings held true no matter what the ethnicity, culture, sex or age of the subjects were.

Really a liberal gene? that has to be the dumbest thing I heard in a while.
I recommend reading the comments below because they are just stupidly funny
this is going to be open to a huge misinterpretation
I wonder if there gonna release pills for the Conservatives can stop liberals once and for all!
From wikipedia on the D4 dopamine receptor:
Mutations in this gene have been associated with various behavioral phenotypes, including autonomic nervous system dysfunction, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder,[5] schizophrenia,[6] the personality trait of novelty seeking,[7] and liberalism.
Obama only got in because those schizophrenic liberals got a vote for all those voices in their heads
Finally we can eliminate it
genetically superior.
update! they found that the same gene that causes extreme rightism is also the same gene that causes retardation
edit
i wonder how many people can take a joke
update they found that the same gene that causes extreme rightism is also the same gene that causes retardation
Sigh...
Calling bullshit. Personally I believe most if not all views are shaped by the environment.
I'ts still mostly about how you were raised, it's just some people are open to ideas more than others.

yea. you, me and anyone who ever read a 6th grade phycology book which apparently these scientists have not read. I mean mite it have something to do with the more social interaction or the fact that people that live in the same place will be genetically similar and also hold around the same opinions as well
does this same gene cause them to have bad hygiene
BullShit
:downs:

With that logic there must be a Christian gene and a Islam gene. Doesn't work that way.
I wonder what the scientists have to say about people what change there opinions sometime in life
left right left

in the 18th century they thought that Chinese would just learn to speak Chinese, so they put them in a room with other children and they were shocked to find out that non of them learned how to talk. I think its sad that some people still think an opinion can be spread through genes somehow

Life experiences make peoples views change. There is no gene, the scientists are full of shit. All they have to show so far is a 3 paragraph article. When its retested and confirmed by other scientists I will believe it.
I sense a nurture vs. nature argument.
the genes effecting opinion and other things in place of environment is stuff the kkk uses in order to justify there hate for jews and blacks
This is the :downs:est thing I've read in a while.
it's not my fault i'm dumb, it just have the B0X - 5 gene
I sense a nurture vs. nature argument.
well science already knows how that works.
nature is like the hardware that gives you your arms and legs ect, while nurture is like software which tells you what to do with it

All opinions are chemical reactions in the brain. The dosage of those chemicals is based on how your brain interprets signals from your senses as well as stored memories. Since we know that the slightest variation in those dosages leads to different emotions, thoughts or feelings, and we know that genes can alter the dosage of chemicals in the brain, then we know that genes effect how people see the world.
Life experiences, genes, a brick to the head at age 1, and many other elements can drastically effect how you view the world. There's no single factor.
I knew conservatives were missing a chromosome but I guess they're missing a gene too
haha just kidding ridge

yea but getting hit in the head will not automatically have you like one opinion or another also the environment chooses what will activate those emotions

it's not saying liberalism is always caused by a gene, you can stop acting so thick. both environment and genes play a distinct part.
Since most people apparently missed this, I'll point this out as well:
This gene doesn't guarantee you to lean to the left, it only makes you more likely to do so. This is where all the other factors at play in your head come together to make your own, individual opinion.
