A teenager died at an Internet cafe in Taiwan after reportedly playing the videogame "Diablo 3" for 40 hours straight.
The 18-year-old, who has only been identified by his first name, Chuang, had booked a private room at the Tainan cafe in southern Taiwan on the afternoon of July 13, according to the the Australian, which cited the United Daily News broadsheet. Chuang then proceeded to play the videogame for 40 hours straight without eating.
On July 15, an attendant went into the room where Chuang had been playing and found the teen resting on the table, according to the Australian. The attendant was able to wake Chuang, who stood up, took a few steps and then collapsed onto the ground. He was pronounced dead soon after arriving at the hospital.
According to the Mirror, authorities believe the teenager may have suffered a blood clot due to sitting for such a long period of time.
Blizzard, the developer of "Diablo 3," released the following statement, obtained by the Mirror and other news outlets, regarding the teen's death:
We're saddened to hear this news, and our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time. We don't feel it would be appropriate for us to comment further without knowing all of the circumstances involved. While we recognise that it's ultimately up to each individual or their parent or guardian to determine playing habits, we feel that moderation is clearly important, and that a person's day-to-day life should take precedence over any form of entertainment.
Chuang is not the first individual to die following a long gaming session.
In February, 23-year-old Chen Rong-yu was found dead in an Internet cafe in New Taipei City, Taiwan, after having played the videogame League of Legends for 23 hours straight, according to the Taipei Times (via the New York Daily News).

It's really sad how stuff like this reinforces the stereo-type.
40 whole hours? I swear I got bored after about 20
What a terrible game to die for
An Internet cafe that not only stays open 24/7 apparently, but allows you to book a room for at least 40 hours?
What?
Shitty game, and the kid was probably so shitty at it he died of shitting himself because he was so shitty.

I'll bet he was in the zone.
Is this a world first kill by Diablo 3?
God damn, the guy was 18. What a waste of his life. Makes me sad thinking of the happiness he could have had later on in life: getting married, having a kid, growing old with his family. Damn.
[del]Aren't people usually able to stay awake straight for way more than 40 hours? I understand he was playing, but I'm not sure that's a heavy enough strain to shorten the time necessary to die from sleep deprivation from the usual 12 days down to 40 hours.
Maybe he just had more energy drink than blood in his veins (possibly coupled with a weaker than average heart).[/del]
Nevermind, I read everything except that line.
How the hell does one not at least take a small walk in 40 hours?
What I find more scary, is how does the manager of an internet cafe not notice a dude has been playing for 40 hours straight and does nothing about it

I guess a lot of people don't understand the immediate health risks
sure everyone knows that it's unhealthy to play way too much but I doubt they understand how much of those risks don't need to be long term
How long before the family or friends blame the game itself instead of the kid?
Shitty game, and the kid was probably so shitty at it he died of shitting himself because he was so shitty.
shitty post from a shitty poster

It's Taiwan man

from what I've heard I'd get bored at 2 minutes

Somehow I doubt someone who willingly spent 40+ hours straight on a videogame had grand plans for his life.
Why do news articles keep using that image?
It was brought up in another thread involving a diablo 3 related news story.

How do you not go to the toilet or eat in 40 hours.

Japanese Internet cafes are like hostels. You get a room with a computer, bed and fridge/stuff to eat.
As much as I hate to make a joke at such a thing, but this guy and the guy who died from 23 hours straight of LoL apparently are lightweights compared to the people who were fighting that thing in Final Fantasy 11 for 70'ish hours(I think) non stop with apparently no repercussions.
What's in Asians that compels them to play insane amounts of even the most monotone games?
How do you not go to the toilet or eat in 40 hours.
I read this article, went to the toilet, as I was pissing I randomly thought: "Wait, how the hell did he not need to go piss for so long?!", came back to post it but.. :(
I don't even feel sorry for people like this.

Oh Uncle Decard, Internet Cafes aren't real.
Say what you want, but that's really pathetic.

1, it was about 18 hours (because I'm pretty sure 70 hours of being awake and no repercussions is physically fucking impossible) and 2, people were vomiting, feeling physically ill and passing out.
Even League of Legends is more worthy than this game, man.
( I'm pretty sure he'd quit after the 2 hour mark because he got a baddie in his soloq. )

There I fixed it for you.
Every time I read one of these stories I'm like:
"wow, I shouldn't sit down for so long, I should probably get up and walk around for a while.
nah."
