Being stuck in a recession means that it's not often you hear good news for the economy, but this year's UK Budget has seen Chancellor Alistair Darling acknowledge the hugely successful UK games industry, which he has pledged to support by offering Games Tax Relief.
"Our creative industries are a huge source of jobs, wealth and pride," stated Darling. "I will offer help to the computer games sector similar to the steps which are helping to restore the fortunes of the British film industry.
"This is a highly successful, growing industry, with half its sales coming from exports and we need to keep British talent in this country."
73% of the UK's population regularly play games and as such, the UK games industry accounts for £1 billion towards the nation's Gross Domestic Product, sustaining 27,000 jobs, 9.000 of which are highly skilled and talented developers.
Games industry trade association TIGA has conducted research that estimates with the Games Tax Relief, over the course of 5-years, around 3,550 graduate-level jobs will be saved as well as generating and safeguarding £457 million in new and 'saved' development expenditure.
TIGA CEO Richard Wilson said of the announced Games Tax Relief, “This is an inspired decision. In backing TIGA’s Games Tax Relief the Government has chosen the future over the past, growth over decline, success over failure. Games Tax Relief will increase employment, investment and innovation in the UK video games sector."
Wilson added, "Games Tax Relief will ensure that the UK remains a world leading developer of video games. Games Tax Relief is good for the UK video games industry, good for UK consumers and good for the UK economy."
Oh look, didn't the Conservatives talk about this?
I don't care about this, Tory/Conservitive should be given a go, seeing as it has been 13 years since Labour were sworn in.
I want to see what they can bring to the UK.
Ey, can you Britts invade germany or something?

Keep the political discussion out of here. This is about games, not the general election.
This is great news for people like me who are working towards employment in the industry since it means that current studios will want to stay and new studios will open up in the near future.

"Sworn in"? Eh wot this isn't America.
75% of Britain's income is due to Littlebigplanet and Fable.

Is that all? I would've thought it was much higher and if another party came up with this and it proved to move the opinion polls then of course labour'll copy their ideas, it's just like before the MPC was set up and interest rates would change before an election just to curry favour.
"Sworn in"? Eh wot this isn't America.
Blah, same thing!
Voted in then?
75% of Britain's income is due to Littlebigplanet and Fable.
Uh, Codemasters, Jagex and Rockstar North.

But this is a political thread. How are we supposed to do that?
But this is a political thread.
It's about the budget, not which political party has the bigger dick. If you want to talk about that there is a thread about the general election in GD.

This isn't how government works. God comments like this make me think democracy is a failure.
"Hey I'm gonna vote for da torys becuz labor have been in for a long time and they hav to take terns" :downs:

This thread is about the new Games Tax Relief.
Read the quoted text and try to identify places where political parties are mentioned.
Oh wait - there are none.
This is good news. It's about time someone acknowledged how huge the video games industry is and what a leader Britain is in innovation in the field. Fuck giving cinema the money; give it all to the industry that is actually growing.

It doesn't matter, the Budget has always been a political issue.

They were last elected in 2005. Their majority in parliament has lasted 13 years. It is 13 years since they came to power.

It stops little kids from invading other games, so it isn't all a bad thing.

Wait, how does tax work on digital distribution?

It works normally, you pay vat on steam.
It works normally, you pay vat on steam.
Thanks for clearing that up. I thought VAT only applied to physical objects.

Russia won World War 2, World War 1 was a cease fire.
