• Looking for a partner for a comic idea

I'm looking for an artist to draw for a comic book idea, if anyone is interested. I figured I'd better post a thread on it if I wanted it to be seen. Here are a few samples, A Crystal shard emerging from an infected human's hands. Crystal shard on one hand, scary mineral claws on the other. Trying to see how it would look with displaced bones. None of these accurately represent my drawing skill... they were bursts of relative brilliance, if you can believe that. But if anyone is interested PM me or post a reply of a better version of these drawings. It shouldn't be very hard, I've seen people make better drawings by accident. Consider the setting modern at the start but developing into a sci-fi setting as the story progresses with an emphasis on worldbuilding. For the crystal sticking out of the poor mans bones in the included image I'm teetering between a white, foggy, semi-transparent crystal and a semi-metallic grey one. So I'm also looking for input on that Additionally, I would never use anyone else's art without giving them a fair cut. When my story becomes profitable the artist will make the same as I would on anything of mine they drew.
So I've been told I should include more detail. I'm hesitant to go too in depth for fear of future publishers being able to judge me based on early draft ideas I've posted online but I will scratch the surface. The continuity revolves around the appearance of a sentient crystal on earth and the human it bonds with and, more importantly, the changes to society that result from his actions. The first part of the story will be told in a non traditional narrative format by Alexis, a girl reliving the memories of this Amalgamation as it merges with her nervous system to repair catastrophic injuries. It will tell of Adam, as he grapples with sharing a body with a strange form of life and of misattributing blame to this life from for his increasingly murderous behavior and of his unwillingness to connect on any level with humanity as his human mind progressively deems itself more than human. The crystal itself is a neutral alien life form dedicated to researching other cultures as they reach technological apex, life from their planet is unique it its predominantly mineral disposition and alterations to this life forms the basis of their technology. The species reproduces asexually by directing its embryonic shards toward a planet the shard travels in a seed ship. Asexual budding is also possible but considered taboo. After the shard infects an indigenous life form the small seed ship is stowed safely by the organism to eventually grow into a means to return to its homeworld and share its findings. The crystal renders the infected host sterile and uninterested in sex. Most host organisms consider themselves members of the crystal race rather than their own and dedicate themselves to research in an attempt to hasten their return to the homeworld analogous to this races afterlife. Crystals corrupted by budding are not permitted to rejoin their race. Races in this series do not come with their own pronounceable names and are not predominantly humanoid and will be given English names by the cast. Characters infected with the crystals can translate the language of previously researched species through their hereditary memory but due to differing vocal ranges and use of pheromones in many alien languages regular humans are not equipped to understand alien speech. I realize I have focused on the crystals here. So here are three other races. Cast name: Lizards Called by (English speaking) humans: Hachurui dansei or Hachu (Transliterated from Japanese Hachūrui no dansei) These raptoid aliens are near extinction from millennia of inbreeding and cross caste hostility, now unified in their fight to survive, fertile individuals are highly valued and honor bound to reproduce. Their proximity to the crystal homeworld has made them a convenient research subject for the crystals, the individuals sterilized by the crystals and left entirely uninterested in reproduction have reduced the lifespan of their species as a whole by hundreds of years. They are technologically advanced and attack crystals on sight. Cast name: Turtles Called by humans: Mercs This avian species are capable of flight on their low gravity home planet, however on higher gravity planets they can not even maintain consciousness without expensive environment suits. To compensate some individuals are engineered from birth to be able to function on high gravity worlds, their combat suits obscure their vestigial wings, making them appear humpbacked, but when deprived of their combat suites the powerful, clawed wings make excellent close quarters weapons. Cast name: Shrooms Called by humans: undiscovered These fungoid creatures are ironically the closest to having a humanoid form, they appear as long armed humans made out of thick hyphea tendrils, their culture and mode of reproduction will be explored.

Or you can practice more until you reach the point where you can just draw it yourself without having to pay anyone.
Do you have an idea for a story, then?
Yes I do, I built the world around the story, rather than vice versa. It will tend toward the violent end of the spectrum, in humans the crystal is inclined to replace bone requiring it to cut its way out if it needs to be used, for example. I don't want to post too much on the internet at large but if you are interested in hearing about it let me know and I will PM you.
You can world-build and invent all the monsters and races you want, but nobody's going to give half a shit if there isn't a good plot at the core of everything.
You can world-build and invent all the monsters and races you want, but nobody's going to give half a shit if there isn't a good plot at the core of everything.
That's my motto. Can you draw? do you want to hear a neat story and see if you're interested?
Why can't you post it here again? Do you think some secret Internet spies are going to come and steal it from you and sell it to Hollywood or something?
Just my opinion, since most of the labor that goes into making a comic is drawing the illustrations, you should probably do your own. Or, leave it in story format. Very rarely do I see an indie comic that is drawn and written by different people.
That's my motto. Can you draw? do you want to hear a neat story and see if you're interested?
I can't really draw any better than the things in the OP. I was just saying that based on experience with writing. Another thing I have to say is if you're holding things back from the thread due to a worry about someone stealing your idea, don't. Writers are the only artists who seem to go through this thought, but illustrators, graphic designers, musicians, and others never seem to worry about it. The fact is, the MORE you post your work online, the HARDER it is for people to steal it, because posting it online basically serves as hard evidence that you yourself made it. But if you have some other reasoning for not posting it then ignore everything I just said.
Or you can practice more until you reach the point where you can just draw it yourself without having to pay anyone.
As someone who wants to make a webcomic/graphic novel himself; OP you should really do this. If you're like me you've put years of thought and time into your world. You should put the same into bringing said world to life. You don't need talent to draw. You just need time to practice. And anyone with paper and something to draw with has time to practice. Draw a shitty looking hand? It only means the next hand you draw will be less shitty.
I guess you could call this an [sp]edgy[/sp] story :suicide:
I dunno, if I was to partner up with a writer I'd want to see the writer actually proving themselves skilled enough with literature. Plenty of fully written stories/books available for free that I could pick up and say "man, this would make for an AWESOME comic" - And you bring nothing to the table at this current stage that I can't spend an afternoon making up. And I don't even write anymore. You also flatter yourself a wee bit by being paranoid. Do you have even the faintest idea how endlessly many books and comics are sent off to publishing houses daily? Daily. And they're all advertising themselves as the next Harry Potter/Ender's Game/Watchmen. You're not even likely to see webcomic fame let alone garner enough interest in your work to make self-publishing a worthy venture. I say good luck, but you'll be hard pressed to find any artists worth their salt interested in something this vague.
Not to mention if someone were to, for whatever reason, actually steal your work, the publicity produced by the ensuing internet witch hunt would make your work infinitely more successful than it would be without the 'unfortunate' publicity boost.
your story makes no sense, when does it take place? why do the crystals visit earth? where is this even happening? I have no idea, I recommend you take some time to flush out your world before you post out a random idea.

Present, "The crystal itself is a neutral alien life form dedicated to researching other cultures as they reach technological apex, life from their planet is unique it its predominantly mineral disposition and alterations to this life forms the basis of their technology. The species reproduces asexually by directing its embryonic shards toward a planet...", and the American Midwest.
What would have helped immensely would have been if you spent time trying to figure out how to make a brief epitome of what you have in mind for the story instead of producing walls of text that are more likely to confuse people than draw them in. It's all about brevity at first. You can make plans for something more fleshed out and detailed after you manage to catch people's interest.
IMO it seems like you need to seriously work on your setting and story before you start a graphic novel. I don't see why you're so worried about having your ideas stolen. Your idea doesn't matter if the execution's shitty. Look at star wars. The expanded universe will never make the prequels better.

I am in draft stage, hence the artist search.
I've PMed you and have yet to receive a plot summary. Who is the main character? What are they trying to do?
Ah, crap, sorry. on its way.
Sorry, you need to Log In to post a reply to this thread.
