FUCK YEAH SCIENCE
I was born deaf and 8 weeks ago I received a hearing implant. This is the video of them turning it on and me hearing myself for the first time :) Edit: For those of you who have asked the implant I received was Esteem offered by Envoy Medical.

The Future.
I would say 'My hearing is augmented' (which I suppose hers really is) but that is simply awesome. Being deaf your whole life and finally being able to hear yourself? That must be like, if you were to discover some radical new form of Physics that let you understand everything in its entirety.
AND PEOPLE SAY TRANS-HUMANISM IS A BAD THING. Look at how much it affected this ONE person. And she isn't alone in her problem. If everyone had implants, nobody would be impaired. It would simply be amazing.
The Future.
If by the future you mean the past two and a half decades, then sure.
This technology has been around for a long time, although it still is amazing.
That's amazing. Has to be pretty overwhelming to hear yourself for the first time.
I have a really great idea for a game based loosely on this type of thing. But I wont be one of those guys.
I can't wait for future medical advances. Science rules
So is this some kind of new hearing implant they've invented?
The only kind of hearing implant I've heard of before is that Cochlear implant but from what I've read it doesn't give you "real" hearing.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but cochlear implants convert noise into electrical signals, which then affect the bones in the ear which then send the signals to the brain as sounds.
Used to help my mum do her work after she came home when I was a kid. She works with deaf kids, so seeing stuff like this is fucking awesome.
If she enjoyed her own voice she's going to love music.

Cochlear implants have been around for some time now, but they work pretty terribly compared to a normal ear, so they're often only used for deaf/nearly deaf people, to give them a half-decent sense of hearing back. Basically they're like a last-resort kinda thing due to their quality.
Still better than nothing.
I'm currently in process of getting a cochlear implant for free (40k), I currently have the choice of rejecting it or accepting it. It's not really a easy choice as you may think it to be.
Are you deaf or just have a hard time hearing?
If you're just having problems hearing and aren't deaf why are you doing it?
Profoundly Deaf
I have a really great idea for a game based loosely on this type of thing. But I wont be one of those guys.
a game where you start out blind and deaf and have to use touch to guide yourself through a series of levels until you get your hearing back, then onto a few more hearing oriented levels until you get your eyes back.
I still don't understand how she can hear other people well but not herself, how does this work?
Her hearing is augmented
I still don't understand how she can hear other people well but not herself, how does this work?
Your own voice creates additional vibration in your skull. Maybe this messes up the signal from cochlear implant?
Makes me feel happy that science and the technology of today is already going this far that we can solve hearing problems like this.
Already excited whats coming next
Posthumanism is the future.
She did ask for this and so would anyone with the same problem.
Keep up the good work science !
Science, fixing what god (apparently) fucked up.

Flawed logic is flawed. It's like saying "hey that one guy can run again because he has prosthesis for his legs ! LET'S ALL CUT OFF OUR LIMBS SO WE ALL HAVE PROSTHESIS INSTEAD".
It doesn't make any sense. It sure is a good thing to see someone getting her life improved by technology but that doesn't mean it's necessarily better than ours, nor that we should all suddenly butcher our inner ears with scalpels so we can get fancy implants instead.
Trans-humanism should be limited to these cases where people actually need it, not just because it's fancy and nice and can improve a human being that was already well built and without any problems in the first place.
Reminds me of those glasses that via microchips could make blind people see.
WHO SAYS SCIENCE'S ONLY FOR THE BAD?
iirc could only do something like 16x16 pixels currently, black and white, however was something with they had a 128x128 pixel version coming out in the near future, which you could upgrade to without any physical operations, just take off the old glasses and put on the new ones.
Science's amazing. /fanboy

I want a Trans-Human penis with extra features and luxuries. Is it really so wrong?
For someone born deaf, she speaks very fluently and clear.
Also fuck yeah science!

Probably trained over the years using the feedback of others

Yes it is, a dildo is much less expensive.
Profoundly Deaf
I would say definitely do it,you can't loose anything

Two things
One) You always start a shitstorm over the smallest things.
Two) Pretty much what I meant. Anyone who has this problem or something similar should be able to get an implant similar to the the lady got. And besides, I wouldn't cut off my legs unless I had to.

Why?If people want to improve themselves let them, and make it available for free for people who need it

Also true. Allow people a freedom of choice in matters like this.
