• Why is"God Damn" such a taboo phrase in the Christian community?

My class was reading Joyce Carol Oates' short story Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? aloud in class. There is a part where Arnold Friend says "...I don't know every god damned fat woman ever to exist." A very humorous line, yet many people said afterward that it made them extremely uncomfortable, one student going so far as to say it "made them sick". I was wondering why? If you think about it, it's simply saying that this object is damned by god, such as in the sentence "These god damned shoes cause my feet to blister", or Arnold Friend's casual remark. Why is this so wrong? Many times in the Bible, it says god 'damns' things, yet now it's wrong? I really don't know, and am simply asking, why do you think it's so taboo?
I should elaborate; many of these same people have no problem saying "god" in a casual sense, such as "God, why do I have so much homework?", yet, will never say "god damn", as it is wrong. I guess these kids are hypocrites, or is it that much worse?
people get offended by everything all the time

I damned your god lulz Have some toast
Because you're not supposed to "use the Lord's name in vain"
You should say the almighty lords name in vein. PRAISE THE LORD
"You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name." Reference: 10 commandments
I hate people's sensitivity to swearing in literature. It's as if they would rather just have the book censored to have blanks or [expletive] where the word is. Censored TV has made swearing so taboo that people are almost afraid of the words.
"You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name." Reference: 10 commandments
beat me to it
goddamn goddamn goddamn i love you jesus
Idk, but personally, I just find it wrong, but those are my beliefs, obviously the majority of Facepunch and I will differ in beliefs. But yeah "God Damn" is like the only "curse word" that I won't say.
It's not a taboo, say it all you want
It's just a little phrase, big fucking deal. It's not like it physically hurts anyone with half a braincell. God damn those people are stupid.
I had no idea to be honest. There's nothing wrong with saying that something is damned by god where I live atleast. We usually phrase stuff like "These shoes from hell" ("Dessa helvetes skor") instead.
I should elaborate; many of these same people have no problem saying "god" in a casual sense, such as "God, why do I have so much homework?", yet, will never say "god damn", as it is wrong. I guess these kids are hypocrites, or is it that much worse?
Because God Damned us all! hur hur hurrrr :downs:
:iiam:
Because they're stupid.
I don't think people in this thread are really getting it, it's against the ten commandments (core christian religious "rules") to take god's name in vain. Therefore when you say it, Christians are going to possibly get offended, I don't understand what is difficult or stupid about it.

A piece of literature that they can't bear to read because two words in it offend them.
What does your story have to do with the thread title exactly? And God damn is not a taboo phrase in the Christian community. Unless you're talking about bible thumpers. That's a little different.
Because they really think that God will damn them if they say it out of context, like damning other ethnic groups and homosexuals and intellectuals.
damn god, doesn't want me saying god damn
God damn Jesus Christ!
Goddammit, those people are bullshitting the lot, they didn't get sick, they just felt uncomfortable. Typical Christians retards making a fuzz about everything they don't like.
Because the third of the ten commandments is "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain"
Don't take the Lord's name in vain etc etc.
