see you, Bob Iger. According to a Deadline report, Disney CEO Iger allegedly let slip at the company’s annual shareholders meeting today that preliminary design is “just beginning” for the previously announced Avatar theme park, which is planned for Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Orlando. The park is set to explore both familiar and as-yet-unseen settings from creator James Cameron’s Avatar universe (including environments from the two sequels in development), and is the result of a licensing deal between Walt Disney Parks & Resorts and Fox Filmed Entertainment, allowing the Imagineers at Disney World to develop attractions based on the film as an extension of the Animal Kingdom area of the park. Iger reportedly said the park “in all likelihood” won’t open until 2015 (initial plans for the park call for construction to begin in 2013).
Source. Is it just me or does this seem a little overboard?
Personally I wasn't crazy about Avatar but this could still be pretty cool. Honestly, this isn't too far off from how Animal Kingdom was originally planned. During the development phase, there were plans for a more fantasy-themed area which was meant to be where Camp Mickey-Minney is currently. Due to budget issues, they had to scrap the initial plans and decided to use used the area for characters/a few shows. There's still a a rock shaped like a dragon's head near the entrance of Camp Minney-Mickey as they started a bit of construction before it was cancelled. edit: The OP is extremely misleading, they're planning an expansion at Animal Kingdom, not an entire park.
stop fucking basing entire parks on films that noone will give a fuck about in 20 years! you had harry potter ..but noo your having to ruin a lot of peoples favourite ride Jaws just because you want to expand it and rake more money in. now you want a space kitten park too? what the fuckity shit! imagineers don't seem to actually imagineer anything anymore. they just turn whatever someone else's imagination gives them into a few rides and a hot dog stand. can we have some originality please?

Honestly it would have been cooler if it was a "Across the Universe" themed, with rides based on different Sci-Fi movies that focus on animal life within the movies.
I was a little confused as I thought they were talking about the cartoon and not the fancy James Cameron film. That said the theme park will be dogshit
I don't think they're really focusing on the movie itself, it's more based on the setting.
pretty sure they already did pocahontas
pretty sure they already did pocahontas
They had a single show which was Pocahontas themed and it closed years ago.
They had a single show which was Pocahontas themed and it closed years ago.
so we have a precedent for it not being successful
I don't think they're really focusing on the movie itself, it's more based on the setting.
I know, but still they shouldn't have all there resources dumped into one story. They are running on terrible logic for park making at the moment, since they can be limited by creativity.
so we have a precedent for it not being successful
Not necessarily, they tend to switch out certain attractions after a while. Pocahontas is less relevant now than it was back in the 90s, hence why it was closed. Same goes for Tarzan, they used to have a show based on it but it was replaced by Finding Nemo.
The OP post is extremely misleading, they're only planning an expansion to Animal Kingdom (which will take the place of Camp Minney-Mickey), not an entirely new park.
I don't think they're really focusing on the movie itself, it's more based on the setting.
So then just stop mowing the lawns for a few years and it's set.
Just make a crazy looking psychedelic park that's not tied to an IP that will make you cum in your jeans at night.
The OP post is extremely misleading, they're only planning an expansion to Animal Kingdom (which will take the place of Camp Minney-Mickey), not an entirely new park.
I just took the title from the source site. Blame EW, not me.

Holy shit if they do any kind of justice to the whole atmosphere with the glowing plants and stuff it mite b cool.
I've been to Animal Kingdom hundreds of times, this place really needs a new section. Avatar section might be great.
animal kingdom is fucking boring, anything will make it better.
of all things, why avatar?
I came in thinking it would be an Avatar the animated series theme park and got super excited. But upon reading the OP, I am disappointed :(
of all things, why avatar?
Because money.
of all things, why avatar?
It's an interesting concept, but could flop.
If im not mistaken the harry potter ride is in universal not disney, and the jaws ride is still in universal as well, or it still was when I went there last year
yeah my bad. i tend to lump all the parks in together for some reason. also they tore down Jaw's this January much to the dismay of many. claiming they would build something even better and "updated for the modern age" ..its quite sure its more happy potter shite. why they can't expand what they have i don't know but now its spreading to other parks like a cancer because its popular as fuck and a great money maker at the moment

Oh well at least I had a chance to go on it while it was still there
Alton Towers over here has nice diverse rides, I don't know why american parks seem to cluster around one IP. Hell, AT is like a bunch of different parks in the same place, Haunted Forest, X-Sector, Cloud Cuckoo Land, etc.

Ya, I've seen this in the works for a while, though it finally has been green lighted. The new section has potential, as it could be made using newer technology to help improve the experience. I am not sure what, but I know for certain that the Imagineers will be working hard with Cameron to get make this possible and to make it amazing to the guests that come by. Just like they always do.
