Say your goodbyes — Microsoft is killing off the Internet Explorer brand.

While Microsoft has dropped hints that the Internet Explorer brand is going away, the software maker has now confirmed that it will use a new name for its upcoming browser successor, codenamed Project Spartan. Speaking at Microsoft Convergence yesterday, Microsoft's marketing chief Chris Capossela revealed that the company is currently working on a new name and brand. "We’re now researching what the new brand, or the new name, for our browser should be in Windows 10," said Capossela. "We’ll continue to have Internet Explorer, but we’ll also have a new browser called Project Spartan, which is codenamed Project Spartan. We have to name the thing."
Internet Explorer will still exist in some versions of Windows 10 mainly for enterprise compatibility, but the new Project Spartan will be named separately and will be the primary way for Windows 10 users to access the web. Microsoft has tried, unsuccessfully, to shake off the negative image of Internet Explorer over the past several years with a series of amusing campaigns mocking Internet Explorer 6. The ads didn't improve the situation, and Microsoft's former Internet Explorer chief left the company in December, signalling a new era for the browser.
I wonder if it's the name they change rather than the issues. I sure hope we get something from Microsoft that can compete with chrome / FF - something that old os's can install so clients will stop demanding "but it should work on ie8"
I'm confident its successor will let me download Google Chrome in an even shorter amount of time on my future PCs

seeing as chrome's a bloated shit at this point, that's ill advised.

Yeah I genuinely hope this new browser turns out really well. As long as they keep trident and change everything else. Both Chrome and FF are being a pain in the ass lately.
If it doesn't take an age to start up and supports addons then I'll be all over it.

What's wrong with Chrome? I never have any problems with it at all.

It's an absolute memory hog and prone to leaks.

People always say this but Chrome sandboxes literally everything so yeah it is going to use a lot of memory.
And I've never once seen Chrome start leaking.

Only issues I've had with Chrome are the large amount of memory it uses, and the fact that they don't let you choose the install directory right from the installer.
Good night sweet prince

Have you ever left a tab with FP open for a day or so?
I love Chrome but right now I have 4 tabs open and it's using 800MB of RAM which is a bit silly.
I used to love Chrome, but then one day it just went "fuck you" and stopped working. I installed Firefox, ported over my bookmarks, history, cookies, etc., and never went back.

The only issue with it is that I can't watch YouTube 360 shit

Every fucking tab has its own process and I tend to browse with a lot of tabs. Like, 2 or 3 browser windows open at the same time and 10 or 20 tabs in each. In both of my monitors. So you can imagine how much memory this eats up.
If their browser has addon support, and is available for other platforms (especially Android), then Chrome and FF might be in some trouble.
Funnily enough though, I've had less issues with Chrome than I've ever had with Firefox. Firefox was always prone to crashing on me, and the default profile would almost always corrupt itself after a few months, forcing me to re-create my bookmarks again.
Chrome uses a shit ton of memory, no doubt about that, but it's been generally more stable for me as well has having a lot of nice features that Firefox doesn't.
Honestly, the entire web browser scene is a complete mess. You either have somewhat functional browsers that use a shit ton of memory for basic tasks (Firefox, Chrome), or you have lightweight browsers that have barely any modern functionality and are obscure as fuck making them incompatible with most modern standards (Qupzilla, Midori).
IE10 actually strikes a nice middle ground, but it doesn't have addons, so it's basically useless.

You're in luck.

grrrRRRRRRR
there's a reason why chrome uses individual processes
also p much every computer these days should have enough ram to support a chrome install with ublock
bitching about the tab sandboxing is dumb

It really adds up with 30+ tabs. Don't pretend like it doesn't.
if you don't have a PC with enough RAM to handle chrome, upgrade your computer what the fuck are you doing
used chrome basically since it was released as a competitor to firefox, who at the time had (and still has) some of the worst memory leaks out of any browser and have never experienced a memory leak. i leave tabs open all the time. i also have a normal amount of RAM in my PC.

30+ tabs are you fucking kidding? you don't need 30 tabs open all the time bro
I loved Chrome, but its just eating all my ram nowadays. I switched back to firefox, it uses less, but, I do have some issues with HTML5. Here is to hoping that its good, and has some plugin support that isn't toolbars.

And driving with 1000lbs of lead in the rear seat also ruins gas mileage.

Why do you have 30+ tabs open?
It really adds up with 30+ tabs. Don't pretend like it doesn't.
It is totally ridiculous and unnecessary to have 30+ tabs open, no offense.
Have you ever left a tab with FP open for a day or so?
Who just leaves their browser open for two days on the same page?
Well I guess I'm just unusual in my browsing habits then.
I don't really have a problem with Chrome, but Chrome for Mobile? Jesus Christ that thing sucks.
Y'all remember this?

I wish I had a video of the occasional app-breaking iOS bug too - and the crashes, general slowness and unresponsiveness on both devices.

Typical processes view for me:
[t]http://s.gvid.me/s/2015/03/18/Rfa793.png[/t]
It extends all the way down, I think there's 100 or so processes.

How about the massive one that leaks every time an extension loads a UI element.

Right now I have 93 open on pale moon. Sucking up 4 GB of memory. Admittedly one window is a bunch of wallpaper threads, many of which are 4k. I often end up with nearly 200 tabs open when I'm working on a large code project because I have dozens of pages for API info open. Chrome is beyond unusable at that point without something to streamline how it sandboxes stuff.
I still don't see any reason why use anything else but Firefox.
[editline]18th March 2015[/editline]
I have 14 tabs open in the primary group, and then 6 and 5 more in two of these separate tab "groupings" (which is a real good fucking feature, btw), and real memory usage is still under 1GB. Having 16GB of RAM, I find that wholly acceptable.
Why do you have 30+ tabs open?
I personally like to make a new tab grouping for each assignment for school I get, where on each tab I open individual presentation files from lectures, the assignment file itself, various sources I manage to google, student community pages that discuss the particular assignment, and so on. That's usually like 5-10 pages in the group, and I sometimes work on like 3 assignments like that at once. AND the groupings sometimes stick for weeks at time.
