Some of my first starter pics. These are all (but one) things in my front yard / across the neighborhood.

More to come.
To be honest, they're really boring shots. The only decent one is the 3rd picture but even then it's still not that great either.

Also, the gear isn't something you should be thinking about when taking photos. It's more about how you take the picture rather than what equipment you have. I only have a dinky point and shoot camera yet I still get some pretty decent shots from what everyone says. That's some advice you could use in the future for photography.

We were all as boring as this once; read up on therule of thirds and other composition techniques for photography. Bullseyeing your subject is usually bad, and a skateboard is bad subject matter. Go outside your front yard
Thanks, I'll try to take some more that are a bit more catchy. How do you define an exciting shot, I mean, not that much goes on around 7 o'clock in my nieghborhood. Haha.
Oh, there's always going to be something interesting. Learn how to use the shutter speeds and you'll be able to get long exposure shots if you get to a street with decent enough traffic. Go to a restaurant and find some interesting people, or even ask some friends to go out with you to go take pictures together. I take loads of pictures each day, since I always look around me to find something that catches my eye.

On Topic, i agree with the above posts, try exploring the area around you and look for some good subjects
From what I can tell, you have pretty good composition, but your shots are really washed out

Washed out means it needs to be more vivid. Dead colours is what you represent.
Gear means nothing, the most important piece of equipment you can have in photography is the one behind the camera's body.

I really learned the meaning of gear is hardly anything when I got comparable results with my mom's XTI and kit lens to my 40D and prime lenses.
I think lenses are more important then the Camera itself and then the most important of all is the person shooting the picture.
Well it depends what kind of photography you're doing.
If you have to do lowlight stuff, the higher end the camera the better. Like a 40D can shoot at 1600-3200 iso with tolerable grain that can be edited out later.

When taking pictures of people, don't overdo editing. Just do small touch ups on the persons face or edit the lighting a tiny bit. But don't overdo it with a lomo effect or something of the sort.
