MPs are set to receive an 11% pay rise when a parliamentary watchdog publishes its final recommendations on salaries this week.
The rise is due after the 2015 general election and will take pay to £74,000.
But the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority is also expected to announce a squeeze on pensions and the resettlement grants that MPs are given when they leave Parliament.
Didn't they also increase the retirement age this week and cut unemployment benefits a few months ago?

Thats how they payed for it.
It's just funny that they gave power over salaries to IPSA so that MPs could no longer vote themselves a pay rise, and now the frontbenchers are begging IPSA not to give them a raise but they're getting one anyway
Why, exactly?
Because there's not people living on the poverty line or anything, its fine take the money, I'm sure all the Disabled and those who cant work whose benefits were cut don't need it either..
This annoys me, specially when pensions have been messed around with, makes me think I'd be better off hiding my retirement money under my pillow.
Damn the wage gaps are getting big, it'd take me 4-5 years worth of work to make what they make in a year now. I should probably get a new job or go unemployed for a year again instead.
they don't deserve a pay rise unless the people receive an 11% pay rise too
This is somehow the fault of the benefits system/ NHS/ EU/ immigrants.
MPs currently earn a basic salary of £66,396 but the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority is expected to say on Thursday that their pay has fallen behind in recent years and a substantial "one-off" rise is justified.
holy fuck £66,396? That's actually not that much considering these guy are basically the leaders of your country. In Canada MPs make $160,200, which is more than double.
I honestly think MPs should be payed the average wage of the population, that way it discourages career politicians and it motivates them to actually do something when everyone is in the shit and earning shit average wages.
Why, exactly?
It's an incentive to claim less money as an expense iirc
Something similar was done in Queensland not so long ago and people were literally so furious that most places were going to strike in protest so the Government decided not to do it
"opposition"
lol government

They get to claim a hell of a lot on expenses though
If you don't want the increase, donate it.
Although if the increase means they won't be able to claim for anything, and the claims are for things they need like travel expenses I guess it's fair.

High wages of politicians act as a (admittedly poor) counterweight to the financial power lobbyists have. If MP's get next to nothing as official wage, the relative financial influence lobbyists have would increase even more, as MP's would be more open for alternative ways to sustain/enrich themselves.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't IPSA given authority on this because of the amount of money that MP's were claiming on expenses a few years back? Now they are giving them a payrise despite their refusal?
What?
MP fatcats getting a payrise while people struggle with bills whats new?
the goverment needs a overhual
they don't deserve a pay rise unless the people receive an 11% pay rise too
11% increase on a already huge wage is not the same, they should not get a pay raise, but rather a pay decrease. They are politicians, not scientists or doctors, they get all the expenses PAID outside of their wage too.
So pay freezes, reduction in hours or no jobs for the plebs. A nice 11% pay rise for MPs, on top of their expenses that pay trivial things such as council tax and heating. And the 12 weeks of holiday a year
We're all in this together...

Having just been enlightened on this, I feel this needs to be emphasised. Lobbying is corrupting many governmental processes, the most well-known in Britain at the moment probably being the RN and RAF being forced to accept design-confused aircraft carriers to be equipped with Lockheed-build solid gold (but stealthy!) shit fighters. But there are many smaller examples. The MPs perceiving that they have unfairly low pay leads to them accepting large sums of money from corporations to make socially, politically and economically questionable 'decisions' on their policy.

The reasons why judges and MPs get such high wages is to reduce the ammount of curruptibility in a sense.
If they have a lot, they are less likely to accept bribes. If you put them on the average wage of the population, but still give them power to decide over millions, a lot more people would be much more likely to accept a nice extra bonus.
So I'm paying £9000 a year for university, have about £15 a week to survive on after rent & bills, and I'm going to have to retire when I'm 70 so these bastards can have a £7000 pay rise. Seems fair.

Well in this case, they are arguing against the pay rise. If you must, direct your anger at those to blame.

For people that are pretty much running the country, 60k pounds seems like a very reasonable amount for how much they could get otherwise by conforming to lobbyists' demands.
