I was looking on domain.com.au, and australian real estate site, and as usual everything is an extreme rip off, and unless youre upper class in sydney you probably wont move out until you're 30. Anyways I decided to look on an american real estate site just for the hell of it to see how expensive houses are over there.
and holy shit, the prices you guys pay there are amazingly cheap. Lets compare, and keep in mind currency conversions are moot because the aussie dollar is worth more than the US dollar, meaning a currency conversion would only further my argument (that sydney is getting shafted)
First up this 3 bedroom texas home. Now i dont live in the US, so inform me if the suburb this place is in is next to a meth riddled trailer park or something which would explain the price.

$198,000

Alright, now lets compare that to sydney. The area this place is in is close to the city, so to be fair that will drive up the prices a bit. It's also hipster central.

Guess how much this tiny 1 bedroom townhouse is.
$629,000!
I started looking in more expensive areas in the US, like the CA bay area, but even then the prices were still drastically below what we pay in sydney, and i doubt im going to find anything more expensive unless I go to an expensive part of manhattan in new york or something.
Lets find something a little further from the city to make it a bit more even in terms of location. This house is in the northern suburbs, a slightly above average area (for sydney).

3 bedroom house

$750,000.
What the fuck. I love Australia but if this trend continues (prices are growing at 15-20% each year in sydney) I may have to move out of here, because its becoming impossible for young people in sydney to ever dream of owning a home.
You really have to ask why our shit is so cheap right now ?
You really have to ask why our shit is so cheap right now ?
when your economy is in the shitter, house prices go down. when ours is in the shitter, they stay the same, or just go up slowly.
Look for houses abit further from the CBD area. Usually they're quite cheap.
Also dude you have to realise Sydney is one of the most expensive places to live on earth
Look for houses abit further from the CBD area. Usually they're quite cheap.
Unless you go to the hills, houses are extremely expensive for what you get, pretty much everywhere that isnt out in the middle of nowhere. It's ridiculous, and to make it worse that moron kevin rudd relaxed foreign ownership laws a few years ago, meaning house prices were driven up further.
It really varies where you're looking. I live in Montgomery County, Maryland, and it can get pretty expensive.
3 bed 2 bath: $699,000

but the website I got that from might be bullshit, it says this is a 4 bedroom:

Living in America is cool
[editline]29th July 2011[/editline]
Floridas cheap like in Miami in the shitty part
America is one great big suburb sprinkled with a few metropolitan areas. There can literally be miles upon miles of residential homes with little to no facilities for business or entertainment. (Only schools or big box grocery stores, generally.) It has its ups and downs.
when your economy is in the shitter, house prices go down. when ours is in the shitter, they stay the same, or just go up slowly.
Personally, I would just not stick things in the shitter at all.
Also explain this americans, how can a house be $15,000?
http://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/3254-S-181st-St_Seatac_WA_98188_M10570-64587?source=web
we have parking spaces, literally parking spaces that cost that much in sydney city.
Largely because it's less about the size and more about location.
Also do americans hate apartments or something? Every property outside of new york i see is a free standing house. I wish it was like that here.
Yup, house prices are fucking ridiculous. Unfortunate, but true.
Your best bet is to buy a plot of land in a developing area and build a house. I live in Point Cook, Melbourne. This part of the suburb didn't exist 4 or so years ago, but my family put a house up here along with everyone else at the time, and all of a sudden there's basically an entire new suburb (Point Cook was probably originally... 1/2... if not 1/3 the size it is now). Cost us like 360K in total (land, house and all)... I think.
I hate whenever I try to tell Americans how good they have it (incredibly fast internet that with high data caps (if any at all) that's cheap, cheap houses, lower general cost of living) that they always respond angrily with something like, "just because you have it bad doesn't mean we should have it bad too!" or, "it's still not easy living!" You can probably feed an entire family for a month in America for what it'd cost to feed one or two people over here for a week!
It's all about location. I've seen huge houses in the middle of nowhere for extremely low prices. But when you get close to large cities, a smaller house might end up costing a lot more. I don't know why that house near Houston is so cheap though, I'd expect it to be pricier v:v:v
Only got a year left till I'm out of my house and every young person ever here owns an apartment
[editline]29th July 2011[/editline]
So yeah I'll be getting one like everyone else
You think those prices are not bad... Here let me snag you some stuff from Tucson, AZ.

Reason: Our economy is in the shitter. My dad bought a house for around $600k in 2000. He sold it in 2005 when the market was at it's highest for $1 million, but now a day's I believe it's worth less than what it was worth in 2000.

Oh hey a trailer house! Yeah those go pretty cheap, but you'll run into a few problems with bugs.
Almost 200,000 for a 3 bedroom is not 'cheap'.
And who the fuck buys a house as their first step into moving out. You rent an apartment or live in a dorm.

thats a trailer
Dude you totally could fix one of those up, and it'll automatically be the most epic house in existence... You would probablly need an elevator though.

People dont live in dorms in aus. Also, people dont move out as early in the US, people here move out at like 25.
and 200,000 for a 3 bedroom is unbelievably cheap. 200,000 doesnt even get you a studio apartment in sydney. a 3 bedroom is at least 600,000 and thats if you live in the west of sydney, which isnt that great of an area.

just wait four days, houses will sell for five thousand
My house cost $350,000 and it's in a very nice looking suburb. With 2 floors, 5 bathrooms and errything
Check house prices in California and then rethink this thread.
You won't see a home cheaper then 300,000 here in Canada, and some homes are up to 1,000,000 even, just two story homes.
Check house prices in California and then rethink this thread.
This is in SF city.
http://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/1738-Newcomb-Ave_San-Francisco_CA_94124_M24860-79369
it would cost over $500,000 if it was anywhere near sydney city.
