Anderson Silva lost his fight against Chris Weidman for the middleweight title after Silva kicked his opponent and broke his leg in what may be a career-ending injury.
Weidman was declared the winner by technical knockout in UFC 168 in Las Vegas, due to Silva's gruesome injury. In the second round, Silva threw a leg kick which was checked by Weidman.
At that moment, Silva's leg snapped and he fell to the canvas in what MMA Junkie called "one of the most gruesome breaks in UFC history."
Leg bones are really strong...but only in one direction. It doesn't take much force at all to snap them like twigs if it's applied from the right direction...say...perpendicular to the way they're intended to bear force. Someone who does MMA for a living will have enough muscle strength to deliver a kick strong enough to snap them as such, especially when the point of impact is where it was.
It's like trying to break a pencil by pushing on the eraser end. Simply isn't gonna happen. But if you bend it longways it goes pop without even needing two hands. Same exact thing happened in Silva's lower leg.
I wonder if the snap was audible and got recorded.
I'm personally just amazed he stayed standing as long as he did. I've broken several bones in my time but if I ever heard the double pop of my tibia and fibula snapping in two, I'd be sure to projectile vomit and shit myself at least a few times before I hit the mat.
Based on the gif, one has to wonder how long it took him to realize how terribly wrong things had gone.
The idea makes me ill.
Weidman hardly had to lift his leg for that block. I don't know what the fuck Silva was doing kicking that low.
He was aiming for the knee joint, its a legit kick.
reminds me the bone bending after it was dunked in vinegar
Lol my brother bought this fight on ppv after it was over. His leg was freaky though.
This is why Muay Thai fighters strengthen their shinbones by kicking against trees for hours. It's not only about having big & strong muscles but also strong bones, seems a lot of UFC fighters forget this!!

Based on my experience with leg fractures, I am guessing right after he swing back his leg; he must have felt movement of the bone or lightness. Probably why he continues to elevates his left leg.

Kicking with your shinbones against something hard is generally a dumb idea when you can just stomp people.
