Female study-abroad student goes to India, comes home with PTSD due to sexual harassment experienced
(CNN) -- Michaela Cross, an American student at the University of Chicago, has written a powerful account of her study abroad trip to India last year, during which she says she experienced relentless sexual harassment, groping and worse.
Upon her return, she says she was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and is now on a mental leave of absence from the school after a public breakdown in the spring.
Cross, a fair-skinned, red-haired South Asian studies major, titled her story "India: The Story You Never Wanted to Hear." She posted her account on CNN iReport under the username RoseChasm.
Her story has struck a chord around the world, racking up more than 800,000 page views as of Wednesday morning. It quickly found its way to India, where many readers sympathized with the story and men felt compelled to apologize for the experience she endured. Others called for greater perspective and warned against making generalizations about India or its people.
India's deadly gang rape of a 23-year-old woman in New Delhi happened a few days after Cross left India in December, and she said that helped others understand what she and her classmates went through. The country has continued to see several high-profile cases of rape and sexual violence cases since then, and the government has introduced tougher laws and punishment for sexual crimes.
If you meant my post, I'm not sure because 6 months is a very long time to travel around. I know she is getting a flight from Delhi to Dharamsala (up to somewhere near the Himalayas) and i think she is gonna work her way down from there, do long train hauls etc. She has been groped in the past on a short visit and told me a story of a man that followed her for a mile i mean what the fuck. That weren't even solo trip. Hope she is cultured up dress wise so they don't think she is some sex prowess depicted in western TV.
I have to say that part of the world have no respect for women, even here in the UK. They need a fucking smack.
Sister wanted to go to somewhere in the middle east when she was in school. My mom said HELL NO to that.. so she settled on China.
As if any other country would've been a better choice.
I have to say that part of the world have no respect for women, even here in the UK. Can't remember which way round it was, but in one region women are basically treated as equals, then it becomes progressively worse as you head down the other way.

well if you head down the other way that would be going from north to south right

Just like minorities in the US!
I have a close female friend that toured India for a year and wasn't harassed much more than in any other country, my anecdotal evidence is just as good as the one in the OP.
well if you head down the other way that would be going from north to south right
Wasn't intentional. Turns out it's south that's least hostile to women.
I remember watching a spinoff series of Ice Road Truckers where some of the main drivers went to India to tour some of the world's most dangerous roads. Everyone stopped to stare at the woman driver, naturally.
It's kind of funny how mobs of people seem to drop what they're doing and just stare, almost like a poorly programmed AI system.
There's 2 facts i've learned about some people in India:
-They sexually harass or rape you
-They manage to get curry flavored shit everywhere in the bathroom

Perhaps I'm reading this incorrectly, but it almost looks like you're implying that you've tasted stuff in the bathroom...

from a western perspective it's bad in both regions, i've been to both.
but in the north there's a bit more honor killing going around

R.I.P in peace Daemon's mum.

I don't understand what you are saying. Read it back to yourself
So it's okay to sexually abuse women, but it's unacceptable for them to wear bikinis.
Good going, India.
The generalization going on in this thread is absurd. No, not all Indians think rape is okay, and I'm sure a great deal of them are just as disgusted at this news and the state of their country as we are

"rape porn"
"free rape"
"rape videos"
I think you are overly optimistic.

Don't take this story as a reflection of what the people of India are like, I, along with my old high school, went to India, and I have never met more respectable, kind and welcoming people. From my experiences they are all so, so friendly, and it really is a fantastic country. Bizarre yes, but fantastic, don't worry about your Mum, I'm sure she'll be fine! In fact, I'm sure her experience of India will change her outlook on life for the better!

Lets put this in the woman's perspective, okay? Good, so, men in India will sexually harrass women even if they wear normal clothes. Don't you think, for one second, that BIKINIS, designed to show as much of the body as possible, would be a BAD IDEA, considering some men lose control at just being a female?
