In another startlingly anti-consumer decision Twitch.tv has implemented staggering delays in all of its streams as it pushed out what it called a, "Major Video System Update." The update, which Twitch says improves the video system's stability and scalability, adds a delay that can stretch up to 60 seconds. That's a minute between what's broadcast and said by the streamer is received and shown to a viewer -- severely impacting stream interaction.Let's start at the beginning. Twitch states that they are experiencing explosive growth which has been compounded by the service's release on Xbox 360 and Xbox One, as well as its impending release on PlayStation 4. In order to provide the "best quality video to as many users on as many platforms as possible" this new system has been implemented. Twitch says that the new system allows them to serve 15% more traffic than the old system with the same hardware. This new system has been at work on mobile platforms and consoles since May earlier this year. They then stepped up and used the system for all viewers for the DreamHack Winter 2013 event to what they call "great success." Earlier this week the system went live full-time for all viewers.
http://www.neoseeker.com/news/24328-twitchtv-update-imposes-delay-of-up-to-60s-in-all-streams-viewer-interaction-severely-affected/
It can be up to 60 seconds depending on traffic, not always 60 seconds. This is one of the most sensationalist titles I've seen in a while. Don't worry guys, your late night indie game streams with 3 viewers probably won't be affected.
Twitch states that they are experiencing explosive growth which has been compounded by the service's release on Xbox 360 and Xbox One, as well as its impending release on PlayStation 4.
??? Shouldn't this be the other way around?
Audience interaction isn't as important to Twitch as is people watching League streams all day.

Their claim that the site will now run better for users is counteracted by the effects of the delay and the money they save on bandwidth and whathaveyou is at the detriment of the streams themselves large or small.
It's a shame own3d got shut down. Competition is always good.

Twitch says that the new system allows them to serve 15% more traffic than the old system with the same hardware.
Yeah! I mean, who in their right mind would BUY more servers after their service is on two consoles? It's definitely better to crap on the customer and shoehorn everyone into the same servers.
"Hey, everyone is moving from Youtube to us. What can we do? I know, let's make a bad decision as well!" [editline]19th December 2013[/editline] I've noticed this and I find a large interaction space a little irritating. I don't like being responded to so long after I say something. :v:
It's a shame own3d got shut down. There's like a 30 sec minimum delay now.. horrible
But what does this mean for VGCW/Salty Bet streams, which ride almost entirely on viewer feedback?
I guess I was right when I figured the delay I was getting wasn't normal. I just figured it was due to changing my bitrate to the max allowed. I can't explain just how annoying the delay is when tweaking encoding settings and trying to get results in a realistic time. And yes, I'm getting this delay with low traffic (just myself testing), so I'm not exactly buying that excuse.
I already saw a big like 10-20 second delay on my streams anyways, so I'm sure mine will be just as bad.
Quick, everyone switch to http://live.bittorrent.com/ Or ya know, host ye' own livesteam servers.
Doesn't Vinesauce use Twitch for gaming?
Doesn't Vinesauce use Twitch for gaming?
They do and all streamers are annoyed by the delay, and it really affects the stream as usually the streamer would be talking with chat all the time but it's nearly impossible to have a good conversation now.
But what does this mean for VGCW/Salty Bet streams, which ride almost entirely on viewer feedback?
It means very little for vgcw, as they am hardcore about the results and 2kwality not just chat spamming memes 24/7, contrary to popular belief. Salty Bet, on the other hand, is fucked.
Quick, everyone switch to http://live.bittorrent.com/ Or ya know, host ye' own livesteam servers.
I have a cheap 100mbps dedi server running on Ubuntu, I dunno how I could set up a livestream server on it though v:v:v [editline]19th December 2013[/editline] To be fair one thing that would make Twitch a lot better is not the amount of delay, but rather making sure that everyone has the same delay within 1/2 seconds. Probably technically unfeasible though
Quick, everyone switch to http://live.bittorrent.com/ Or ya know, host ye' own livesteam servers.
That's pretty cool, gonna have to keep my eye on that.
Well, that kinda sucks even if the delay isn't permanent. Watching Let's Players like Purge, Pyrion and Trump and discussing moves/capslock-backseat-gaming makes them more interesting in my opinion. Difficult to do that when some people drawing from overloaded servers will be lagging like hell. I mean, it's not exactly Shakespearean lore I'd be missing out on, but it's a big reason why I prefer catching a livestream over watching the uploaded version on YouTube later, even if all the chat provides is four scrolls worth of LOL when something unexpected happens.
I love when casters actually talk and interact with the viewers, hopefully the delay will only be on the top viewed streams.

I only started streaming recently and this is a tiny bit annoying
Salty Bet might have to compensate somehow with the delay. Fuck sake though, I'm thinking about getting into streaming myself in time for Dark Souls 2 and a minute delay sounds very worrying. Only ESport events are going to gain for this while everyone else gets shafted. A one minute delay does sound a bit tragic for... a certain guy though we all know. But everyone could do without it.
I frequent Twitch quite a lot, and have subscribed to several channels there. It really sucks knowing that I'm going to be having delays of up to a minute instead of just a few seconds tops. It's a completely different experience, not being right on top of everything that is happening. I can only imagine what it's like for the people actually streaming, they've got to wait around for the viewers to catch up, and there are a hell of a lot of instances where that would ruin the whole point of having a live audience that can reply almost instantly to what you're saying. God forbid Twitch purchase more hardware to support this growth.
