Turkish PM: To me, social media is the worst menace to society
ISTANBUL, Turkey -- Turkey's prime minister on Sunday rejected claims that he is a "dictator," dismissing protesters as an extremist fringe, even as thousands returned to the landmark Istanbul square that has become the site of the fiercest anti-government outburst in years.
Over the past three days, protesters around the country have unleashed pent-up resentment against Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who after 10 years in office many Turks see as an uncompromising figure with undue influence in every part of life.
A huge, exuberant protest in Taksim Square subsided overnight, but an estimated 10,000 people again streamed into the area on Sunday, many waving flags, chanting "victory, victory, victory" and calling on Erdogan's government to resign.
If people are dying in protests, something is wrong.
Social media is pretty shitty but this guy seems to be way shittier
He's saying this because people are getting info on the riots to the world through social media, which is something he can't silence (very easily, at least.) He's kept all the turkish tv shows airing food programs since friday I've heard.
Turkey in now in a culinary golden age, praise be to glorious leader's cooking programs
I can't believe in this day and age, people like him still think they can get away with these atrocities.
Long live the social media menace!
It's a menace because your bullshit is more difficult to keep under wraps.
okay.
Hate the medium of communication, not the reason for the discontent and riots, right?
I'm pretty sure shooting your citizens is more menacing to your society than facebook is, Erdogan.
Social media is shitty because they can't control it like state media.
I think it's pretty obvious he's speaking out against all the shitty casual games built around social media.
Social media is shitty because they can't control it like state media.
the best part about social media is that dictators and corrupt governments can't get away with anything anymore, it's great.
Isn't Turkey in the European union? Surely that means there will be harsh consequences?

It's not; they want to join but the EU told them to step up their act regarding human rights before they were allowed to
The one sure way to out yourself as a dictator, or as a wannabe dictator, is lament how easy it is for the public to communicate their views.
Even if much of what gets published is lies, it shouldn't matter. You can point out the lies and back it up with evidence. That will discredit the other side without limiting the people's ability to have open communications.

Until those poor poor rebels everyone was cheering against the evil oppressive government turn out be way worse than the government.
It sounds like Turkish administration gets off easy because they're in NATO

You can't bundle all rebels into one group though because it's largely composed of different types of people.
tbh I think water canons and tear gas is what protesters deserve. I mean those that throw rocks and fences at police. I think it's fucking stupid to throw rocks and fences at police then be crying and bitching about tear gas. If they had peaceful protest without causing damage to police and property around, that wouldn't happen.

They deserve this? Warning, somewhat graphic.

It's more than just a few squirts of water and one or two tear gas grenades.

maybe the protest would be a bit more peaceful if the shitrat police weren't going around beating the fuck out of random pedestrians and firing teargas into residential neighborhoods and hospitals
Social media is the worst menace to evil dictators
