Bali Nine pair Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan plan to go to their deaths fighting, as they refused to sign a death warrant issued ahead of their executions. News Corp reports the duo have told a hearing their impending deaths were unjust, as they had been rehabilitated during their time in an Indonesian prison. Sukumaran is understood to have said he wants to look his executioners in the eye as he is shot. Australian artist Ben Quilty, who has become friends with Sukumaran, told 2GB he would face the firing squad with dignity. "Myuran always said to me he would never take this lying down, that he would stare them down, that no-one would cover his eyes, that he would face it with dignity," Mr Quilty told 2GB radio. The pair’s lawyer Julian McMahon said the pair remained composed as they refused to sign their death warrants in a final court hearing. "The way Myuran conducted himself reflected the depth and strength of his character. He was calm, composed and straightforward given what had just been said to him," Mr McMahon said. "When he received the 72 hours’ notice he remained dignified and peaceful. He spoke with courtesy and clarity to a hushed room explaining why he felt to proceed to execution was unjust." Chan also refused to sign the document, saying his ten years in jail had helped him to be rehabilitated and he wanted a second chance. "I have helped other inmates as much as I can and I still do and that’s not me talking, you will hear that from a lot of people, the ones I have helped,” Chan told the prosecutors. The pair also made their final requests to the court. So what exactly changes if they sign the warrant? Does it quicken the process, change the method of execution or what? Must be some reason to normally get a person to sign off on their own execution.
haha why the fuck would you ever sign your own death warrant

[editline]27th April 2015[/editline] 'They wanted $130,000 ... and then more': explosive Bali nine bribe allegations
The former lawyer of Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran has outlined explosive allegations of corruption by the judges that sentenced the Bali nine duo to death, saying they asked for more than $130,000 to give them a prison term of less than 20 years. But Bali-based attorney Muhammad Rifan says a deal fell through after the judges later told him they had been ordered by senior legal and government members in Jakarta to impose a death penalty. The judges, it is alleged, then asked for an even greater sum for a lighter sentence, money Mr Rifan did not have. The sensational claims by Mr Rifan that the initial trial of the pair was deeply corrupted were revealed by a joint investigation by Fairfax Media and the former host of SBS' Dateline program Mark Davis, a Gold Walkley-winning journalist.
http://www.smh.com.au/world/they-wanted-130000--and-then-more-explosive-bali-nine-bribe-allegations-20150426-1mtwc1.html Would not surprise me given how corrupt the damn place is. [editline]27th April 2015[/editline] If I was stuck in an Indonesia jail facing death I think I would forgo the legal costs and the trial and just pay someone to get me out.

Corruption runs to the core of many countries in Asia, and is pretty much seen as routine there. The Phillipines are very similar, my uncle tried starting a jet boating business there and was met at every legal step with bribery implied to keep the process going. He gave up eventually after throwing away a lot of money. It's also horrible that the judiciary and executive branches of Indonesia's legal and political system think they can collude and tell each other how to handle matters. These things are separated in the west to prevent horrible things happening to people.
"signing your own death warrant" is an actual thing?

This is why I refuse to go back to Bali, I've been there once and cannot see why other Australians love it so much. Probably because of how cheap it is and how close it is to Australia. It's probably one of the dirtiest places I've been too, we almost got scammed as soon as we left the hotel the first time. The only positive thing I took from Indonesia was the stories of the people we met. Don't go to Bali.
"signing your own death warrant" is an actual thing?
As far as I know it's usually along the lines of: "I understand what has been decided by the judiciary. Signed: (prisoner)" In this case pretty much their murder.

It's to my understanding (correct me if I'm wrong) that if they don't get executed they face life in prison anyway? I feel like if that were me, I'd lose most of my will to live anyway.

With the government as corrupt as it is we should invade and overthrow it :v:

And it is cheap. Its a shame, Indonesia has some fucking good food and nice people.
I thought giving them money would work just like that, but I never thought of them asking for more. Fucking ingrates.
Chan also refused to sign the document, saying his ten years in jail had helped him to be rehabilitated and he wanted a second chance.
This is why the death penalty (and indeed, life without parole) is pure bullshit.
This is why the death penalty (and indeed, life without parole) is pure bullshit.
In most circumstances, I see life without parole to be enough justice if someone was deemed to be "impossible to functional normally in society" like serial paedophiles, rapist, killers, mass murderers, basically anyone whose shown that no matter how much rehab they get, they simply cannot function and would cause a big threat to society

I don't think anyone in this thread calling for the invasion of Indonesia has a firm grasp how large their army is compared to ours.
I don't think anyone in this thread calling for the invasion of Indonesia has a firm grasp how large their army is compared to ours.
Yeah, but your guys are supposed to be really well trained and equipped compared to other armies. In a fight, I'd bet on ten studs over a hundred punks any day of the week.

I'd accept maybe "the good hotels cost a lot of money", "the wine is expensive", but DIRTY and SCAMMERS? holy shit, please never leave your hovel in whatever shanty town you live in, because you clearly don't deserve to travel overseas (User was banned for this post ("Flaming/Ban history - last chance" - OvB))

Scamming is common all around the world, and I'm sorry their aren't up to your high aussy standards of cleanliness if there's anything ruining it, it's the Australians. Anyway I think the video Govna posted did a better job explaining than I ever could
Well for once, its got pretty good scenery, and people love the 'tropical beaches' there. And it is cheap. Within 20 seconds getting out of the car, we were swarmed by people trying to sell us stuff. It's a shame, they were really nice and this guy had this most amazing hand made sculpture of one of their gods he had been working on for a year and wanted to sell it for food. But I couldn't take it off of him because I wouldn't get it through customs. Went to the beach too and got swarmed by people tryna sell me stuff. I actually had a guy grab me by the arm and tried to drag me into his store to sell him stuff. The people are nice, but I was on holiday lol.
I remember my friend bought a bongo set in bali and it had some form of animal leather/skin for the drum material. In customs they just cut the drum skin with a knife, still leaving most of it still strapped to the sides and they didn't even see the third, smallest bongo. I'd only go to Bali for a holiday if the plane tickets + hotels were free. Same with any other place
There's a guardian liveblog on right now. http://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2015/apr/28/bali-nine-andrew-chan-myuran-sukumaran-executed-indonesia-mercy
