This has been revealed to be a camera system that allows the wearer to see objects in the physical room around them, helping to avoid collisions. Some have questioned whether the device will be affordable, though. By pressing a button on a handheld controller, the user can see objects near them ghosted in to the virtual reality environment. This merging of physical and digital is intended as a safety feature - and a solution to one of the practical problems facing VR.
That's not exactly huge. Definitely useful, but not the big breakthrough I was expecting
I already use eyes to see objects around me
I already use eyes to see objects around me
You should patent this.
Some have questioned whether the device will be affordable, though.
This is the main thing I am worried about.
I thought their "big announcement" was tomorrow?
Knew it was all fluff. Not exactly too worried about having to see around me at all.
but we already knew the vive had a camera on it, they showed it in the first vive reveal video. They just removed it in the developer version.
Rather disappointing when you think of other possible breakthroughs that could happen in VR. Calling this a "very, very big technological breakthrough" seems a bit off. Useful probably but is a camera really a "very, very big technological breakthrough" or am I missing something here. (3D live scanning?)
I already use eyes to see objects around me
Very impressive if you have the capability to do that while wearing the headset! Seeing as that's sort of the whole point. I mean really you should clear your play area but for people with pets/roommates etc that might be moving stuff around them it's probably pretty useful.
I was really hoping it was wireless
I was really hoping it was wireless
Yeah because having input lag on VR is going to feel smooth
Yeah because having input lag on VR is going to feel smooth
As unrealistic as it is, it's a pretty annoying problem that could only really be fixed by that.
Yeah because having input lag on VR is going to feel smooth
However naive you think it might be, he obviously was hoping their breakthrough would be technology making wireless usable, not that they added existing tech to the headset because what breakthrough would that be?
So it's this after all?
So it's this after all?
This is awesome. Imagine that in the future, when you pause the game to go to the menu, you will just see your room with a menu floating in it. If this is implemented in a non-shitty way, I'd actually call this a big breakthrough, as it gives you back some of the control over your environment you give away when you put a completely opaque headset on your face.
So it's this after all?
So never blind will not be exclusive to VIVE but will come built in with the vive?
Yeah because having input lag on VR is going to feel smooth
their breakthrough should have been faster wireless technology then
If you consider the idea often shown off in sci-fi of holographic displays that hover in the real world, and you can actually touch them and interact with them, this may end up being the closest yet to that. Bleeding back in the their older augmented reality ideas, instead of having your workspace confined to one or two monitors, you put this on and can look around and use everything around you as the workspace, without actually taking up physical space in the room. So you could put a browser window off to the side while you've got like a design program open, then you need to check something so you basically click and drag it back in view, or just look down or to the side to see it. With the sensors you mount to the corners of a room, you could probably take it a step further where the system can actually remember where you position things within the room. So you could take an image and place it up on the wall like its a poster or painting without it actually taking up space. And since the sensors can track your movement around the room, it'd stay where you placed it and be visible like anything else. You shut everything down, it all goes away, perhaps even with everything saved in the positions they had been. So the next time you start it up, you've got your pictures posted up again, various windows positioned where you like them, and so on. That potential is absolutely there.
their breakthrough should have been faster wireless technology then
So you don't ever want the Vive to come out then? It's not some trivial problem.
their breakthrough should have been faster wireless technology then
if these VR companies wait any longer to release than they already have, VR will die. they need to get first gen products out (should already have if anything)
their breakthrough should have been faster wireless technology then
it's weird to insist that a breakthrough should have been something completely different that doesn't eveen make sense
if these VR companies wait any longer to release than they already have, VR will die. they need to get first gen products out (should already have if anything)
Um, no it won't. It won't die because it hasn't even been born yet. Taking more time to release a more impressive product would be nothing but beneficial. The problem is every company wants to be first, or have the best early product.
people lose interest.
after waiting 4 years for this tech to come out - very much i've lost hype and regained it more times than i can even remember
people lose interest.
Looking at the 2016 CES schedule and how many events have to do with VR, I think the concern that VR won't take off because of the lack of available consumer devices at the moment is unjustified. We are watching VR take off right now.
after waiting 4 years for this tech to come out - very much i've lost hype and regained it more times than i can even remember
But you have to admit that after the hype is vanquished, if it comes back, it comes back more powerful than before.
