UVB-76, otherwise known as The Buzzer, is a shortwave radio station just northwest of Moscow that has looped a rather irritating, electronic sound akin to a foghorn to play over its waves. Thing is, though, UVB-76 has been broadcasting that sound since at least 1982 when it was first monitored, possibly longer. Since it was first monitored in 1982, the sound has been interrupted three (possibly four) times. Each interruption was highly distorted. The first interruption was on Christmas Eve, 1997. A man's voice came on and began reading Russian names and numbers. It was repeated several times before the buzzer took its place. The second interruption took place on September 12, 2002. More numbers were read again, but this interruption was extremely distorted and almost impossible to translate. The third voice message was broadcast on February 21, 2006. A man's voice read strings of numbers as well as more Russian first names, sometimes alongside these number strings. The possible fourth message was broadcast on September 29, 2009. On February 20, 2010 (only six days ago) the buzzer was interrupted completely for around 4 to 5 seconds by what is determined to be the song "Moskau", a 1979 German pop song by the band Dchinghis Khan. I've heard this song on IHM. The number of interruptions seem to be increasing, for what could be a number of reasons. tl;dr There is an annoying and mysterious radio frequency coming from Russia that is either a secular audible gateway to hell or just an unused Cold War radio frequency. Didn't a mod have a thread about a bunch of weird signals one time? I think it was Duck who made it. [editline]12:37AM[/editline] I think this signal was mentioned in that thread.
Reminds me of Lost

It even got FP to start joining a website and they shut down all non-premium user stuff because the webmaster was a dipshit.
I wrote all the messages down and I'm attempting to decode it. Who knows? Maybe I could find something out.
Do you know russian? If you don't I could help you out.
Do you know russian? If you don't I could help you out.
I don't know Russian at all. BROMAL was the first message. The names were Borris, Roman, Olga, Mikhail, Anna, Larisa. Notice anything? (look at the first letter of each name and spell it out). My though is that it's the phonetic alphabet for Russia's military, or at least it was during the Cold War. I think UVB-76 is a kill-switch. If we were ever to take out Russia in a nuclear attack, this station would pick up on the fact that there are no frequencies being broadcast, which would signal it to fire Russia's nukes. Makes sense.
Well then we need to cut the cables connection the station to the missiles before we take them out.
Well then we need to cut the cables connection the station to the missiles before we take them out.
Wouldn't work.
Well then we need to cut the cables connection the station to the missiles before we take them out.
They'll still launch the rockets. The signals would be sent faster than your hand could cut the cables, not to mention it's constantly listening for any gaps, so cutting it, wouldn't be the best option.
The voice reminds me of Mondo. (It's a game, go 'n find it. There were two threads on FP on it.) Scary shit. Heard a lot of things imitating it, but it's twice as freaky when you think this thing is actually real. (Supposedly, anyway.) Also reminds me of the time I was sleeping with my iPod on. I hadn't listened to any of it, but I'd put Tool's Lateralus onto it. In my sleep, the shuffle stumbled on to Mantra. YouTube the song and you'll see that waking up to that coming through your headset isn't enjoyable.
There is a theory that this might be part of an automatic nuclear retaliation system. It was certainly known that the USSR had a system that if an enemy strike cut off all communications to the commanders, the missles would launch themselves as a counterattack. Maybe this is what that is, working as some sort of dead-man's-switch, where* if the radio ceases to broadcast this tone a strike is imminent.
Moskau, Moskau, werft die Gläser an die Wand, Rußland ist ein schönes Land, ha-ha-ha-ha-ho-hej *NUCLEAR HOLOCAUST. EAR RIPPING BANGS AND EYE POPPING EXPLOSIONS OF LIGHT BRIGHTER THAN ANY SUN*
Nuke them.
Which would inform UVB-76 to nuke us. Good plan.
Okay, that one where the song is heard distantly made me shiver and look behind me. Fuck you, Thread. One scary thing in my mind is that it's not the exact same sound replayed - it's inconsistent. Sometimes the "horn" is slightly longer, sometimes there's less of a pause between them, sometimes there's a much greater pause. God damn Russians.

Augh what the fuck why did I click on this thread? 2:40 AM with everyone in my house asleep holy shit. EDIT I think I wet myself.
Well exactly one minute before the hour, it goes into this long monotonous tone, till the new hour officially starts.
Okay, I laughed. That kinda just makes it sound like a clock.
Okay, I laughed. That kinda just makes it sound like a clock.
It does that to sync up with the time, to provide a constant single, with the same amount of time in between. Nothing more, nothing less.
