I've been pen-sketching for a while now and I recently got a tablet. Tonight was the first night I've really had to just play around with it.

Not a tablet sketch, but a sketch nonetheless.

Nice to see you know how shadows work, but you seriously need to work on your anatomy.
Shadow of the handle on the first one should be stretched more across the cup. Your anatomy skills need some work. Use thicker lines to finish it up.
The cup handle is very wrong. To me it looks like a bleached onion ring that just so happened to infuse with the cub. The issue is the shading. And the anatomy is very weird on the second pic.1
Thanks guys!
Yeah, I haven't had much practice at all drawing people. It's one of the things I'm going to be focusing on over the next few weeks.
That's pretty cool! How do you change the flow and opacity? Just by pressure?

For the first one I was using the default brush, which uses thickness based on pen pressure. For the second I found a little tutorial detailing how to use pen pressure for both opacity and thickness, which was great. I just can't figure out how to make a brush and set these 'rules' as permanant attributes.
I like how the tuxedo/suit looks like.

About an hours work, just trying to improve my facial anatomy.

Your faces are way too triangular, eyes are too big, mouth too small.

Also, there seems to be almost no chin.
I've got a pencil-paper sketch that's got much better proportions now. I'll scan it soon.
In the meantime;

yet somehow you managed to make it worse.
Don't be afraid to use larger brush sizes. Painting is almost like sculpture if you make it to be, you can always chip pieces away as you get more detailed.
Needs a resize
I suggest instead of using tiny black strokes to shade in, use the exact shade of color you'd like and set it to a larger brush for wider areas of shadows.. then keep goin darker and darker as u get farther from the light source.
and your facial structure has too many problems with it. Before i start a critique on the facial proportions, i'd like you to compare the face you drew, to a reference image ie: and just compare everything, like where the ear starts incomparison to the eyes, where do they end, how far apart are the eyes from each other, at which point does the jaw line change it's angle and form into the chin, etc...
this is a good way to practice drawing faces. which can be hard to do at times..
I hope this helps, the next time i see a face you drew, i'll critique it for you.. but for now, practice a bit more with reference images. it's always nice to see a fellow artist out there that is actually willing to improve on his work and take critique.. good job. :)

Thanks! The facial proportions are all sorted out now. I've been doing some pencil sketches (I'll upload them tomorrow) to get my technique right. Not perfect, but a huge improvement now.
Sorry about the delay.
This one took me a couple of weeks, only working on it a little each day in my spare time. I understand that the background is a little out of proportion.
HB, 4B and 4H pencils.

The shading is good but there's a lot of work to be done on your proportions
btw, good shading + bad proportions gives you a cool style which I happen to like =)
I need to plug in my tablet again.
Thanks for reminding me.

In reference to the pics in the OP or my latest post?

Latest post obviously =]
this makes me want to use my tablet :D
also nice shading
pretty good, work on the faces though, and yeh, some resizes would be nice..
Most recent sketch - on paper again. Referenced from a screenshot from the film 'Moulin Rouge!', same scene as the quote was taken from.

I hate how everyone likes to put emphasis on photo realism. I like your style.
