Australian Immigration Minister Scott Morrison said the news of a death at the Manus Island was "a great tragedy". The rioting comes after some of the detainees briefly escaped from the detention centre on Sunday.
Apparently some of the asylum seekers were claiming that they were assaulted by locals, as much as I detest the Coalition's immigration policy I have a hard time believing those claims though.
Who would have thought indefinite detention in a third world country which isnt the one you applied for asylum in would be a powder keg in the making
I knew a boy from back at school whose family was held at specifically the Papua New Guinea detention centre. They were detained there for 3 years before they were allowed entry to Australia, apparently the conditions were pretty bad when he was there because of the overpopulation in detention. I'm pretty sure the people held indefinitely are the sort of people who start these riots, it's a slow process but they do get entry to Australia. Hell, even the legal way of getting into Australia takes years. I thought this detention centre closed down in 2008. Oh wait, labor reopened it when their policy caused a huge influx of asylum seekers.

Jesus it looks like a concentration camp.
Also Australia has some of the longest processing periods of any country. France gets a bunch more asylum seekers and from what I recall they process them in 11 days or so, rather than the 200+ for Australia.
Jesus it looks like a concentration camp.
It looks like temporary housing for the huge numbers of asylum seekers that came in from 2008 - 2013, there's building complexes out of the frame where the other residents reside who have been there longer, it's inhumane the way it is now.
