Summary from Slashdot:
"Australia is set to update the age rating system for video games, adding a new 18+ category which should allow for the more violent games to be sold in the country. The current maximum age rating for a console or PC game is 15+. If a title didn't meet the specifications for this age it was denied a rating and was therefore not allowed to go on sale. This didn't necessarily mean the game never hit the shelves, but it could only do if tweaks were made to remove some of the most violent or questionable content. The first parliamentary session in the new year is set for the 7th February — giving the poor fellas a nice long break — where the bill to introduce the new age rating will be voted on by the lower house. If it passes there, it will go on to the senate, which has the ability to pass it into law."
the attorney generals will find a way to delay it.. happened so many times
Even if it doesn't pass, there are plenty of video games that are fun that have no violence at all!
Like... err... erm... Pong?
this pops up again every so often and never seems to happen
Yeah just like what Rusty said, doubt anything will come of this sadly
i dont think age ratings are relevant
Let's hope something actually happens this time instead of more wanking about to delay it

They are when your old man government can censor shit for being "too violent"
I don't want this rating being passed because Catholic values
If Liberal go against this... I fucking swear im going to go shoot Tony Abbot.

If games would have earned an M rating here, they're banned from shops in Australia to protect children.
This should have been implemented years ago. If a game is R18+ it is meant for people 18 and over (obviously) then surely a game titled "Ultimate Death Rampage 6: Supreme Gore and Graphic Sex Acts, Gold Edition" with an R18+ sticker on the front, would not be the kind of game a person would buy if they were concerned about their child's exposure to violent games.
So many 2012 jokes in one month. Still, I'm hoping that this isn't a joke and they are very serious about passing it.

They might be if parents cared about the hobby.
Maybe in TF2 the blood won't be cogwheels now.

Uhh, that's the german version.
Now let's wait for a guy to kill himself and for every politician to run and circles, find a video game in his house and undo all the work of the last few years.

Wasn't that patched? Because i find it Hard to believe TF2 was rated 18 when there are rubberducks burgers and wheels flying around instead of gibs.

this is government at breakneck speed!

Unless it's something that gives them money
In which case it passes through like sweetcorn
We were supposed to get it last month...
I wonder if previously censored games will be fixed. L4D2 is shit when enemies instantly disappear when you shoot them.
