So I'm sitting here watching Mythbusters. They've just made a wall from duct tape that withstands the impact of a car. This has left me thinking.

Could you make a bullet proof vest from duct tape?
This sounds incredibly stupid, and it certainly is, but all kinds of materials have been used to make bullet proof armour: phonebooks, silk, almost anything.
It's almost certain that you could make a bullet proof vest from the tape. What I want to know is how practical would a tape vest be? Could I whip one up in an impromptu terrorist attack? How many rolls of tape would you need? How big of a round could it stop?
I'd love to try it, but the most I've got to test it with is a weak air pistol.
So, any gun owners care to take up this incredibly stupid challenge?
Obviously, I have my doubts. But what would it take to make an effective bullet proof vest that at least utilised duct tape? Layers mixed with metal plates or even custard? Who knows.
So berate my idiocy if you want.; but we wouldn't know anything if we had no curiosity.
It would have to be inches thick, not worth it.
maybe
depends on how much duct tape you use and what you add to it
In theory, yes, but it would have to be Really Really thick.
It would have to be pretty thick.
Make one and test it yourself, what could go wrong? Il mail you a gun
If it can take the impact of a car, I expect it could take a bullet but if you even wore the thing, i'm pretty sure it'll still penetrate/do serious damage your body even if it didn't get through the vest
Answer is yes, now go wild... Duct tape yourself.
So many "That's what she said" moments :buddy:
I've always wondered how hard it would actually be to make a very simple stabproof vest...
You could make a bullet proof vest out of egg shells. Given it would have to be alot of egg shells. A duct tape vest seems simple enough, and duct tape is very strong when you wrap it multiple times. If they can make one to with stand a car then a bullets not a very crazy idea is it?
Just make it out of aluminum cans like they did (compressed, obviously), and add a ceramic outside layer.
A car impact's force is spread out quite a lot and the flexibilty of the duct tape could take it, however I doubt it would hold up very well to bullets because they're a lot more penetrative and piercing, which duct tape can't take very well.
You wouldnt be able to stand.
yeah totaly, one layer of it will save you. just try it
Yeah you would be able to. But it would require a lot of tape. Even then im sure you have to back it up with something.
It would depend a lot on the gun being used, round being fired, and angle of impact.

This video is highly relevant.
It would also be very uncomfortable and sweaty wearing a vest made of duct tape.
make one, and I'll shoot you to test

With seven inches of duct tape wrapped around you I think the bullet would be the least of your worries.
A phonebook can stop pistol caliber rounds.. nother mythbuster thing. If you pack any cloth-ey material high enough, then it will likely slow or stop bullets. Ceramic or metal ballistic plates are usually requires to break rifle rounds, though. Packed cloth will only stop low velocity rounds made of softer materials.

I think the same can be said for any other bullet resistant vest.
You'd have to buy a warehouse full of duct tape.
And then some...
For all you people you don't know, a basic kevlar vest will not stop rifle rounds. They are meant for pistol ammunition and buckshot. I'm not even sure why they fired rifle cartridges at the duct tape in that video, of course it will penetrate.

Not really, as I don't think other BRVs are based off of adhesives which melt and become very irritating in high heat.
You'd have a pretty hard time melting duct tape in even the hottest weather. Would probably get sticky, though.
Give it a try, what could you possibly lo-
Yeah go ahead
I've always wondered how hard it would actually be to make a very simple stabproof vest...
You could probably do that with a folded newspaper or leather.
Absolutely.
Make one using instructions found on the internet and try it out on your friend.
I'll be in the News Node if you need me. I'm reading something about a knife-proof vest.
Make the armor, Wear it, and then shoot yourself in the head to see if it works.
