Hello! I wonder how it is possible to do this effect in the face (Queen album). I think this really cool effect. Is there a specific name for it? Is there any tutorials on the internet? Thanks!
First, I'm sure that the album cover is hand painted. You'll never be able to achieve the same quality with a filter. Second, I'm sure you could do a similar effect using an edge detection filter, cut and paste only the edges onto a colored background and colorize them.
Thanks, I'll try. If you have more suggestions, please, tell me! :D
My initial thought was just to increase the contrast of the photo so the shadows come out more, then lasso the shadowed parts of the facial features/hair and create a new coloured layer using them.
This kinda thing is called a stencil. You can actually get pretty good results just with builtin Photoshop filters: http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Stencil-in-Photoshop Of course, it works better if you remove the background first. And you might want to refine the image manually. In any case, if the filters don't get you the cutout you want, or the quality isn't high enough, tracing through with the lasso tool as Cabbage suggested and smoothing out the edges shouldn't be too difficult. Or make it as a vector graphic.
